I actually forgot Williams team is British until I heard the anthem

Well have to say well done Maldonaro but when you look at where he started Hamilton did well to finish 8th but would have been an even more interesting race if Hamilton had started at the front in a 3 way battle with Maldonardo and Alonso.

ps Red Bull looked more like Red Barrel in this race until the end when Vettel finally got the bit between his teeth.

williams is about the most british team isnt it ? it was regarded as THE british team in the 80s so far as I remember.

Lotus and Tyrell were the main 'British' teams in the 70's along with Surtees, Brabham and McLaren, though the latter two had Aussie roots.
Then Williams came on the scene, winning their first WDC with Alan Jones.
Since the demise of Colin Chapman's Lotus team, Williams and McLaren have been the main ones, though of course Jordan and Stewart made an impression too.
(I think when Project4 joined the Mclaren setup they became more British and more successful)

interesting GBG.

I think I had it in my mind that williams were 'more' british than mclaren because i thought that mcclaren had a non british engine before williams did ?

didn't Williams run Renault before Lotus switched to Honda?

In checking up it looks like Williams and Lotus swapped to foreign supplied engines in the same year 1983. I got the manufacturers the wrong way round. Lotus went with Renault and Williams with Honda.
However remember that Lotus had been going for much longer, starting in 1952 and entering 'Grand Prix' in 1958.
Williams F1 only started in 1977, FW had run a team previously under the name Frank Williams racing Cars, later Walter Wolf Racing, (based on Bennet Road Reading about 200 yds from RFCs Madjeski Stadium for those interested).
I would therefore say that Lotus were still the most British of teams in the mid 80's
It was very sad to see their demise after Colin Chapmans death and the controversy surrounding his involvement with De Lorean.
They could not keep up with the development and innovations others were able to introduce. This meant they could not keep Senna who kept putting the car on Pole but couldn't win the races against Williams, McLaren and Ferrari etc.
The current Renault Lotus Team cannot claim the history, despite having the name and the Iconic Black and Gold colours from the JPS Lotus days. (more Black and Yellow than the original Gold to be honest)
