Use of Drugs in County Cricket

As tragic was the news about Maynard's death what was equally glaring was how a cricketer was able to play county cricket and play for England lions despite being a heavy drug abuser. Sure we are not talking about PED's here but still these are banned substances so the question is how is something as serious as this being ignored in English cricket? How many other cases will there be?

I can see an ICC outcry had it been someone from Pakistan. Mohammed Asif received a year’s ban for using similar substances that were not PED and it was actually PCB themselves who reported the abuse.

Of as much concern is the fact he was out with Dernbach and Hamilton-Brown, with whom he shared a house, and both of them claim to have not known he was on drugs.

Now I don't know about any of you, but even though I've never taken drugs, I've been out with and around people who have, and it's pretty obvious what's going on.

Either they are massively naive, or they are lying.

I agree to an extent kash. However players are tested once a season for drugs i believe and the inquest has told us that he had used for 3 months, so his spiral out of control for want of a better expression could have started after that, maybe not, but we won't know.
Also i think any comparison to Asif is wrong as Maynard would have been banned but he's hardly in the position be so now so can't be.

HMM hopefully this may allow of more stringent approach in the county game towards drugs and more regular checks. I think It is a global problem only last year in the IPL two players (one was South African and one Indian) were caught on camera snorting drugs in a party during IPL season.

Bearded you are probably right about the incorrect comparison between Asif and Maynard

Looks like the ECB will be bringing in more tests in the wake of Maynard's inquest. Fair play to them:

I personally woludnt want to be anywhere near English county cricket. It just sounds so depressing by all means. Players involved in such serious drug offenses, and to add to that every other seoson players are suffereing from depression.

ECB needs to look into this seriously.
