Cook

Cook has an aggregate of 7767 with an avg of 47.9 as of today. Can he finish with the highest run aggregate in test cricket?

Current leaders:
Tendulkar (40) - 15,837
Ponting (ret) - 13,378
Dravid (ret) - 13,288
Kallis (37) - 13,128
Lara (ret) - 11,953
Border (ret) - 11,174
S Waugh (ret) - 10,927
Chanderpaul (39) - 10,830
Jayawardene (36) - 10,806
Sangakkara (35) - 10,486
Gavaskar (ret) - 10,122

Kallis will most likely finish in 2nd place behind Tendulkar.
Sangakkara and Jayawardene will likely nose ahead of Lara.
Not sure if Chanders will be given enough opportunities to score a thousand more runs as the most run scorer for WI.

Cook is only 28. Hopefully, he will play another 8-9 years if he doesn't go through a prolonged lean patch.Cook has to average a thousand runs yearly for the next 8-9 years to overtake Tendulkar, assuming the little old man will not add any more than another 500 runs to his current tally.

Tough target. Much as I wish to see Cook achieve the record, I don't believe he will get there.

However, barring a prolonged loss of form, I believe Cook will finish with the highest run aggregate for England. Currently, Gooch is the leader at 8900.

There was a time English teams were called 'Dad's Army'.

Alec Stewart and D'Oliveira were 40 when they played their last match. Boycs, Illy, and Goochy went to 41; Titmus, Graveney, Cowdrey, and Emburey until 42; Hammond until 43, Brian Close (what a sight it was watching him without a helmet battered by Holding & Co) and Gubby Allen until 45; and not to mention the very very old-timers - Woolley (47), Hobbs (47), Grace (50), and Rhodes (52).

It's rare now to see test cricketers pushing 40. With different formats and hectic schedules, it's very difficult now. After Tendulkar, we may see a handful, no more. Maybe Kallis, Chanders, Mahela, and Sanga among the top players.

yh its very hard to see any of these young age players play more than 35 years of age. Pieterson in the interview with warne said he eyes 10000test runs and 2015 wc, but he also said he has been getting more injuries in the recent past and will assess how things go.

I dont think cook will be able to match Tendulkars record. Kallis and tendulkar are the last bunch of players we have seen that goes till 38+ playing cricket.
Now players get so much money from t20, as well injuries that even 35 seems like a milestone.

Not just tendulkars record, I don't see any cricketing record in test cricket being broken by any player ever.
Kallis, Warne, Murali, Mcgrath, Tendulkar, Ponting and so many legends have set records that are so high, and they dedicated more than half of their life in cricket.

KP is currently at 7825. He is only 33, but appears worn out.

The last test cricketer to play until 40 years was Gooch in 2003.

Now, we have Tendulkar. I believe Chanderpaul will push for one more year to retire at 40.

Gooch? I think you mean Stewart!

You are right, terrier. The last was Alec Steward in 2003. Thanks for correcting me.

Couldn't help feeling we would have won if Cook and Trott had scored at a slightly faster rate.

Man with out helmet that too against WI quicks in their heyday. I doubt Lara, Tendulkar, Ponting, Kallis would even consider walking into middle with out one.

Voice,

Holding bagged 28 wickets at 12.7 in 4 tests in that series.

Roberts got 28 wickets at 19.2 in 5 tests.

Close managed to average 33 runs or so. I believe he was called into the team as an SOS measure.

That was the series when Tony Greig made an inappropriate comment that turned the WI bowlers very hostile.
