Ferrari’s Massive Gamble

Morning chaps, how were your respective weekends? I must confess it was a snooze fest yesterday, kind of expected with what happened to Jules. Not to see a safety car on a ‘street’ circuit was amazing. A superbly controlled race win by Hamilton and it was unfortunate Nico made a mistake with his braking but when you watch the replay you will see Hamilton had set him up for the switchback, so he was not going to lead into the corner.

I must say, Lewis has come back strong after Spa and as a fan I have always felt his biggest weakness is mental strength, piling pressure on himself and beating himself up for mistakes and dwelling on them. Like fine wine he seems to have matured, long may it continue. Hill said something yesterday that, we have not seen the best from Hamilton and he will still improve further. That is a frightening prospect, for the rest of the grid indeed.

Before I continue rambling on, I wanted to hear your views on the massive gamble that Ferrari have taken and that is not getting rid of Alonso but signing on Sebastian Vettel. I like many motorsport enthusiasts have always had doubts about the ability of Seb. In a car planted to the ground he looked unbeatable but there was always the question, what if he did not have this advantage. This season that has been laid bare for all to see. He has battled with the unsettled rear of the car all season with multiple chassis changes and Ricciardo has dominated him all season long.

Now, we all know how gifted Alonso is, yes he has issues (what genius does not) but he was not able to get Ferrari to the top and their car is far more unpredictable than the RedBulls and with Kimi not looking interested again, it looks a massive gamble taking on a driver who cannot perform without his DD/BD/EBD.

Looking at the way the rest of the grid is shaping up, you have to wonder, is this decision wise? I appreciate Seb wants to emulate his idol Schumacher but Schumacher had talent and could drive anything. For Ferrari’s sake, I hope it works out otherwise the barren period will continue because if they do not have a car as dominant as the mercs or the red bulls, I cannot see Seb winning races in normal conditions.

Can he take Ferrari back to the top? Is he good enough to take a mediocre car forward? Finally, looking at the dominance of the Mercs, I cannot help but wonder what actual dominance we could have seen with the RedBulls before the power unit era if they had drivers like Alonso and Hamilton and not Vettel and Webber.

Your thoughts please

What? Theres not point saying something if it means didly squat

Do you just say random words that come into your head or does it mean something? Just casually interested

I used the urban dictionary online and it certainly didn't mention "don't BS me" as a meaning. Oh well just shows you shouldn't assume anything, and shouldn't be afraid to ask if you aren't sure.

On a slightly related topic - where do you guys think this leaves Alonso? Will he head to McLaren? Will he take a year out?

As an Alonso fan, I sincerely hope it's not the latter, plus I don't think he's particularly at the age to be taking years out.

Read the thread until it turned into a bit of a farce but think we all know Alonso is a far superior driver to Seb. Would rate Seb somewhere near Perez and/or Sutil.

No doubts in my mind Alonso is an elite driver, the only person close to him is Hamilton. I do not rate Vettel and I think Ferrari have made a big mistake (not getting rid of Alonso, but getting Vettel in to replace him).

Alonso, like all geniuses has some baggage which makes him difficult to "manage." I hope he goes to McLaren, because if he takes a sabbatical, that's him done in F1.

Mercedes have already said they would prefer to keep their current line up well into the future so there's no seat for him there, RedBull do not want him and I do not think Williams can afford his wages.

so far mclaren would seem to be his likely destination , could turn out to be a very good move for him if you examine the potential of mclaren for the coming seasons and the partnerships within the rival teams ---

Certainly does look like McLaren, be interesting to see if he's paired with if that's the case. Jensen putting forward a pretty good case for himself lately, would be a shame if he had to make way.

If i was Mclaren i would tell him to stick it where the sun doesnt shine, regardless of his ability.

If i was Mclaren, id be getting rid of Magnusson - doesnt look like a great driver to me, he will be good, but i dont think a great, and be trying my hardest to sign Bottas.

I think Williams have tied Bottas down long term. It would be a shame to see Alonso not get a decent drive but karma is a bítch as they say
