What is a Sport?

Danny Mills told BBC5 Live last night that to be classified as a sport, “you have to change your footwear." So by definition he claimed the likes of snooker and darts were not sports.

I recall debating this issue a number of years ago on the old BBC606 and there were various opposing views.

It seems some still believe that to be a “sport" the activity requires physical exertion, which if truth be told is incorrect, as there are countless sports (darts included) that demand skill, accuracy, mental strength etc more than physical application.

Thoughts?

So does being good at certain games, check out youtube for some of the feats on games like Streetfighter II etc you need superb hand eye co-ordination to pull them off.

Chess players spend years and years honing their skills etc etc.

I don't think anyones got a major issue with it being called a sport if that's what you want. Some people (like me) don't see it as a sport. I find it more funny that people get a bug up their butt about someone (who plays darts too btw) who doesn't think it's a sport.

Enjoy it however you want.

Video gamers eh! Doritos, pop, joysticks. Surprise your competitor with this unexpected move, swiftly open his bedroom door during the middle of the night and watch the startled face.

I had mentioned earlier in this thread that I do not think computer games could qualify as a sport as the players compete in an artificial environment, which is fixed by a specific piece of coding.

You have to change your shoes to play darts. Trainers are not allowed.

You don't even wear shoes for many sports, such as swimming, judo and gymnastics.

And you also stated that Darts was a sport due to the skill of the players involved.

Therefore the same could be said of computer game players (or chess players, or bowling, skittles. pool, snooker etc etc etc etc)

Darts is a game to me, a sport to you and (probably) a waste of time to a lot of other people

The key point, I think, WWSPD said about gaming is that it is fixed by a specific piece of coding in an artificial environment.

Correct. Coding can be manipulated etc (game cheats) so would be entirely impossible for any type of computer game to become a sport.

As I mentioned previously you personally may not consider darts a sport but that does not alter the fact that officially it has been classified as a sport since 2005.

Darts. Archery. Golf
More a skill than a sport to myself and I play darts

Just my opinion

To compete in any sport do you not have to utilise a degree of skill?
