People who are unconvinced by his signing because of his 'lack of speed' have fallen for an absurd myth.
Let me just take the 2010 world cup for example, where he played a crucial, 7 game role for Germany.
His top speed was 28.35km/hour. The speed gives you an indication of how fast he can go if he is in a situation, where the striker and him are both running towards the goal.

Jay_Gunner, not necessarily, but it does mean that Per is no slouch. CR7 did not hit top speed in the world cup, thats the most probable reason.

Because mertesacker is tall and has long legs, he can make bigger running strides than the average player and so if he doesn't look as though he is running fast, he can make this up with the running strides he takes.

We had a similar problem with Bendtner. A lot of people thought he was slow but he was actually fairly quick. The problem is that with tall players their strids are bigger and they take fewer, so it looks like theyre not fast.
Unless youre Usain Bolt of course.

you know stats wont make him good if he's not. I have seen him and he was shocking!!
I was gonna say it might be different when he plays for Arsenal but ... arsenal and defence dont complement.
