Arguing w/strangers cause I'm lonely thread

Immigration is probably a contributory cause, but I wouldn't have it as a root cause. If immigration was at net zero the last few years, rents will still have risen.

They're obviously not the sole cause but I don't think we should dismiss migrants as a factor. Circa 1.4 million net arrived in 2022 and 23, which is more than the population of Birmingham.
That's an awful lot of houses needed in a short space of time.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I hear the logic but then 500,000 moved out of the UK last year and there is about 250,000 officially empty properties..

I just think it's political posturing to blame immigrants (legal or asylum seekers) for what is a landlord problem and a failure of government problem

Tories acting like immigrants have caused a housing crisis when in reality they’ve not met a single target in new home building, a target that they set
They really are the absolute worst, not long to go now though.

@telegraph
Soaring immigration is fuelling Britain's housing crises says Bank of England’s chief economist. Huw Pill confirmed rents are also shooting up after net migration hit a record-breaking 745,000 in 2022.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Except I'm reading the article and I can't see him saying that
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2024/05/09/soaring-immigration-is-fuelling-britain-housing-crisis/
"To some extent, the rents are really a reflection of supply and demand factors [and] reflect things that aren’t to do with monetary policy.”
He added: “We don’t really build enough houses in this country. And the reason we don’t build enough houses or housing in this country is in large part [because] there’s a lot of issues around planning and so forth."

It's amusing the the JSO protestors doing these things are so old. The right wing boomers don't know who to blame. My FIL ties himself in knots trying to blame lefty, snowflake youngsters for protesting.

I don’t think that the majority are that old mate. Plenty of them are young blue hair types. Your FIL can still moan at the gen z crew on the whole.

Nah, they are a cross section of society. It's just people want to blame it on other generations as it makes it easier for them to process someone having a different opinion to them.
When the guys in their 60s (similar age to my FIL) took to the courts at Wimbledon last year, my FIL didn't know who to blame as it made him go off script. This will be similar and I very much look forward to his rant. I might even get him to explain why the Magna Carta is important whilst he confuses himself, just for my own amusement.
