...anyone still think Lennon should be the manager of Celtic?

NEIL LENNON says that it may be time for his Celtic players to adapt to his trademark managerial style rather than the other way around, as he conceded he may have changed his approach too much in order to please modern-day footballers.

Lennon was furious with the lack of hunger from his men during the humiliating home defeat to Sparta Prague on Thursday night, and he abandoned his usual policy of defending his players in public as tore strips off them for their lackadaisical display.

Having been criticised for adopting a more mellow approach both in private and on the touchline during his second spell in charge of the club, Lennon says it may be time for him to revert to the fierier demeanour that was the hallmark of his first reign at Celtic Park.

“If I am going to get performances like I did against Sparta Prague, then yeah, because it will be my head that is on the block," Lennon said.

“I’ll be honest, I didn’t see it coming. Nothing surprises you in football, but for this group of players to play with that lack of desire? It is on them.

“They have to roll their sleeves up now and show that one, they want to play for the club and, two, they want to be successful.

“They have to show they haven’t lost that hunger because they looked on Thursday night as though they lacked hunger.

“Maybe I’ve gone too far in terms of [changing my style], I don’t know.

“We’re just too inconsistent at the minute. We looked as though we had a bit of consistency going into the [October] international break and then they have been so inconsistent coming out of it.

“There was a great performance last weekend [against Aberdeen] and then totally insipid against Sparta Prague and we [management] haven’t changed.

“We haven’t changed the training regime, we haven’t changed the timings, we haven’t changed the tactics.

“I’ve got to cut the malaise. It’s my job to nip it in the bud. And maybe become that little bit tougher on them now. To get some response for them. A proper response.

“Maybe getting a little bit harder of them might be the way forward. A little bit. But then you can get criticised for that.

“Ultimately, they are professional footballers and the reputation of the club is important. If they fall below that standard, then they need reminding of their responsibilities.

"That [on Thursday] was not a reflection of me. I’ve told them that. That’s not a reflection on me and how I want my teams to play."

Nipping it in the bud was a while ago surely?

Mumbo fackin jumbo.

I'd like to know what the current regime of not being hard on them actually involves and what exactly will change.

So, he has group of uninterested and disgruntled players and now he thinks that by shouting at them he will get a positive response.

Good Luck with that Neil

I dont think Lawell does knee jerk reactions.
Cant see them paying lennon and his staff to go
----------------------------------------------------------------------

He gave Lennon the job while washing his boaby in the shower. That's a knee jerk reaction (pun intended)
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I agree the annual washing of the tims was a strange place to offer him the job.
Name change bet he's still here at new year.
They dont have the money(imo) to bin him
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'll take that bet.

I mean, I think you're right, but might as well get some kind of amusement out of this shiitshow.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If he's there new years day i win if not i'm yours.
P.S. Your "collapse" last night saved our blushes cos as much praise as i have given our defence this season they lost 3 terrible goals and the entire team failed to play out against ten men it was abysmal
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Zach, agree with all that.

But to be more specific, substitute "our defence" with Helander". He had a nightmare from 1st minute, causing Goldson to concede that own goal.

Gerard should have subbed Helander for Balogun.

To date though, Helander has been imense. So he had a bad game. Hopefully it's just a one off.

I was surprised at Arfield not having the experience to close the game out better in the last minute that led to the equaliser.

Benfica have an incredible home record in Europe. 24 unbeaten or something. They are clinical at finishing (queue pointy filth comment here lol).

At 3-1 up with 15 mins to go, Gerrard should have made some subs to ensure we closed the game out. IE get Helander off who was having a mare of a game.

On a positive note - I would have taken a draw in Benfica all day long before the game started. So we got away with it. Major missed opportunity for a major historic
away win for the club though! We were cruising with 15 mins to. Quite incredible really.

Message for Gerrard. Have a plan b when one of your most reliable defenders is having a mare! Use substitutes better!

At the same time, thanks Gerrard for this recent amazing unbeaten run. Keep up the good work 👍

On the Lennon as manager topic.

Celtic have a great record in European competition and at Celtic park is never an easy fixture for any of the great European clubs.

The fact that a second string Prague team turn up and deliver a 4-1 defeat like that , to what is still in theory a strong Celtic squad , should be completely unacceptable to the club.

Gerrard clearly has the beating of Lennon as things stand (imo).

So, I hope Lennon stays.

I think if Lennon does stay, the euro defeats will keep coming, but I think he will get a run going in the league, because there is no real quality in our league.

10 or 55 all boils down to whether Rangers can be consistent against the smaller clubs and difficult away matches at Livingston , Hamilton, Killie etc. Celtic won't lose points there imo.

Long term. Lennon is not good for Celtic imo.

So please keep him 👍

Long term Gerrard is good for Rangers, so we will probably end up losing Gerrard, to some English club unfortunately. Not before 55 this year hopefully though.

Yup.

Nothing about changing personnel, working on set pieces, being more inspirational, reviewing stats, video, changing formation, diet, schedule, training regime, location, anything.

Just a digital shout at them, don’t shout at them.
