Leeds Utd v Norwich City Matchday Thread

Welcome to the Matchday Thread (if your nerves can take it 😰 )
A game we should win, but knowing Leeds we won't make it easy for ourselves

Venue...Elland Road...Date...13th March...Kick Off...1400hrs

Team News
Leeds United
Leeds are assessing the severity of Junior Firpo's knee injury but he is definitely ruled out against Norwich.

Forward Patrick Bamford could make his first start for six months, while Diego Llorente was an unused substitute on Thursday on his return from injury.

Norwich
Norwich City are bolstered by the return of on-loan midfielder Billy Gilmour, who was ineligible to face his parent club Chelsea.

Sam Byram missed that game with fatigue, but is likely to feature on Sunday.
Christoph Zimmermann and Mathias Normann are both training normally after coming off at half-time against Chelsea.

MATCH FACTS
Head-to-head
Leeds won the reverse fixture 2-1 and are looking to complete the league double over Norwich for the first time since 1980-81.
Norwich won 3-1 in the Championship three years ago in the most recent league meeting at Elland Road. They have never won consecutive away league visits to Leeds.
Leeds are hosting Norwich in a Premier League match for the first time since a 2-1 victory in May 1995.

Leeds United
Leeds have equalled the club record of six successive league defeats, failing to score in any of the last four.
They have only had one longer run of games without a goal: six from January to March 1982 in the top flight.
The Whites have conceded 44 goals in their past 14 league fixtures, failing to keep a clean sheet during that period.
Jesse Marsch is only the second Leeds manager to lose his first two Premier League matches in charge; George Graham started with three defeats in 1996.
Leeds have won six of their seven Premier League games against promoted sides since returning to the top flight last season, with the exception being a 2-2 draw with Brentford in December.
Patrick Bamford is one short of 100 career league goals. He has been involved in seven goals in five Premier League appearances against promoted sides for Leeds, scoring four and assisting three.

Norwich City
A defeat would ensure they become the first club to have three separate Premier League losing streaks of six games or more within a season.
Norwich have 17 points with 10 games remaining. The fewest points by a team to avoid relegation is 34 by West Brom in 2004-05.
The Canaries have scored the fewest away goals in the division this season, although four of their seven have come in the past three games on the road.
They have only won one of their past 19 Premier League away fixtures in March, drawing two and losing 16.

That's it then, a lot of lads need to pull their socks up after that dismal showing against Villa, JM needs to put players in their preferred position, stop the square peg syndrome
Anyway, I'm sure the Team will be as disappointed as we were with Thurs nights game and will be looking to put things right
Goal from Paddy (to hit his century) and another from Ayling to win this 2-0, rare clean sheet for us (am I kicking the 4rse out of it )

Not sure what Koch brings to the table.

Phil Hay losing his impartiality

I love that he's been reporting on us since the dark days and obviously can't help but being a bit of a fan. I guess it's only normal to become invested in something you've spent 15 years writing about.

My computer screen froze just before the ball hit the top of the net. Took a second look…yup ball was definitely already over the line . Never went back to the screen, just running around the bedroom celebrating.

So wanted a clean sheet; but 2 extra points regained that could save us yet.

Good on Hay. I felt same. We all did.

Just reading various reports as I didn't see the game and looking at the first half where it seems we played some very good stuff and created a glut of chances and scored, JM played most of the players in their favoured positions, no square pegging.

Then second half JM brings on a 3rd winger and 3rd central defender in midfield and reverts to square pegging and we nearly pay the price, it would seem, correct me if I'm wrong on that assumption.

I hope amongst the euphoria JM is able to recognise that Leeds players in their best positions and not being squarepegged is our only chance of getting anything at Wolves and subsequently all our remaining fixtures too need to be of a similar set up.

Macca, to be fair JM was forced in to that because Bamford and Rodrigo picked up injuries. I think JM
would've faired better if he brought Joffy on for Bamford.
It was tailormade for him. But, we did batter them first
half, couldnt score, but worth the 3.

Bamford did not pick up an injury, as far as JM himself said. Just that the game was played at a very high tempo, and Bamford is not yet 100%

Yeah I think the plan would always have been for Bamford to come off at half time. I think it was the right choice to have him on for the first half and not the second. Allowed us to gain the impetus.

Koch came on and we changed to a back three. Not the change I would have made, but can understand why he would prefer the experience, instead of throwing on a youngster into a volatile game.

Batty that's fair enough but did Harrison swap with James and James then took Bamford's centre forward position? because that's what infuriates me and although we got away with it against West Ham more ofter than not playing 3 wingers, one of them up front doesn't work.

He was holding his leg at times and looked absolutely knackered on 40 mins. Right to sub him and protect him. It showed that a couple of players had cramp later on. It was that sort of game.

Rod definitely had a knock and had to be subbed.

However he got it wrong going for experience over youth I think. Easy to say after the event though and I can see why he thought both Harrison and Koch might help us see out the game.
