That first goal

In my opinion, that first goal Leeds scored completely summed up where we are currently at. And I’m not talking about The Joe Gomez blind back pass (however let’s be clear though…Joe Gomez should not play at CB again. No coincidence every bad Liverpool display Gomez is somewhere around).

No, that first goal was a good Leeds goal…a goal that we used to score. They put pressure on, we made the error, Rodrigo also pressurising. I bet the Leeds coaching loved it as it shows a result for solid hard work. I remember when we used to get in their faces too…they couldn’t live with the high intense pressure.

This is what’s wrong. It’s why we are struggling. Why Trent looks bad. Why Virgil looks bad. As a team we are simply not working hard enough in unison. The quality is there, but the application is lacking right now. Get those running stats back up and the results will follow.

Sorry but rewatch that Leeds goal.

It's not really good pressure, it's average pressure. Gomez turns himself away form the player under no pressure and gets himself into a place where all he can do is back pass

Gomez never considers anything bar that backpack, he actually runs around the ball almost to shape that way. He never looks and plays it to a keeper who's run out to help him as he has also see Gomez intent.

Frankly it was par for course with Gomez as anyone who's been watching has been seeing him flat footed in the middle where sides just recycle then run behind him and he never sees the danger.

He's constantly left unpressed as sides want to push on vvd to rush him but Gomez is able to pass cos he will either pass it badly or play it to a marked man and cough it up.

How city didn't reame him I don't know but that game certainly looks a complete one off.

I agree with that. I’m not actually saying it was the best press ever in the history of pressing but it was enough to force the issue and to create doubt. The point I am trying to make is about OUR pressing and how we’ve not all been doing collectively. Remember when Klopp used to fist pump and go wappy when the ball was won high up the pitch, suffocating opponents, leading to panicking hoofed clearances. Seems like light years ago. But it can be remedied very quickly.

Not sure this is true. I agree with the first part and Mane leaving is pertinent to the failure of the first press. But players like Fabinho Henderson and Nunez(in place of Mane) are simply not doing what the first and second press requires to protect Trent and vvd.

Imagine a front 3 of Diaz, Salah and Mane. Then think of any front 3 you can put out now then you will realise the problem.

You need 2 central midfields and my word both need to be good at the press to compensate what you have lost.

Midfield can’t run, can’t pass, can’t score and struggles to tackle. Herein lies the route cause of our woes.

The same midfield that won FA Cup, League Cup, Charity Shield and a gnats away from winning the league and Champions League. And gave us something to get excited about almost every year for last 4-5 years. They’ll come again. Have a word with yourself.

Football doesn't quite work like that. Firstly that midfield had 2 pressing machines in Diaz and Mane in front of it for the 2nd half of last season when you really came alive (First half Salahs brilliant form kept you in games).

Secondly its a year old carrying mental scard from a last day PL loss and a Champions league Final disappointment.

Thirdly opposition teams evolve, get better and nullify you.

But feel free to think you can flip a switch and you are competing for the Quad again.

It’s almost as if they’ve gotten older and are not affected by fatigue isn’t it.

According to you you’d just bomb them all out. Nobody has battered us (ok Napoli did). I signing here, couple of players back from injury and a couple more hitting form. I wouldn’t be surprised to see us on a 15-20 game unbeaten run soon.

Where have I said that I’d “bomb them all out”?
