Derby County 4 - 0 Accrington Stanley

DERBY COUNTY v ACCRINGTON STANLEY League 1 # 24

1500 Pride Park Monday 2nd January 2023

Thats it - exactly half way through the League 1 programme and do you think we are sitting comfortably? It seems that the more cerebral fans think we are doing more than was expected and yet there are those whose muttered grumblings have been heard when were not annilating teams which seems a bit strange when not even a year ago there may not have been a team to moan about

Still much work to be done to get out of this pesky League 1 - what we have to do is is slowly taking shape and deferring to the excellent half term report' from Vidal - we are ding ok.

Time to reflect at the end of this calendar year on what we have and what might have been. I hope everyone had a good new year.

FFS

This match comes on the back of 1-0 versus Cambridge on Friday - somehow I contrived to miss the goal but it was a deserved if laboured 3 points gained. Work in progress despite the fickle fans.

Team news:- Wildsmith (GK), Forsyth, Hourihane, Cashin, Barkhuizen, Bird (C), McGoldrick, Smith, Sibley, Dobbin, Knight

Subs:- Loach (GK), Chester, Mendez-Laing, Roberts, Thompson, Stearman, Osula

Ah.....to be a Brighton fan at present. Club is run the way a fan of a promoted club can only dream! Recruiting relative unknowns and selling them on for a premium price and not forced to accept peanuts.

The manner in which they welcomed Mac Allister back from his World cup campaign (and success) was a nice touch.

Brighton Management team ' So how do we stop Mac Allister leaving during the January window?'

I think I have an idea.....

Out of curiosity who else thought MacAllister was a Scottish player signed by Brighton possibly from a team like Patrick Thistle?

Whenever I see their name it brings back memories of how we tore them apart in the play off and HAD we been run sensibly with the funds available to MM we could have tasted this joy.

I forgot to include that Swansea have recalled Morgan Whittaker (on loan at Plymouth).

Great outcome for us given we're playing them at the end of the month.

For your information McAliister comes from Irish grandparents, just sayin.

Yes definitely an Irish Mac. Other Argentinian players have had "British" sounding names, e.g. Houseman who was a really good player, late 70s. Argentina was a place of migration for impoverished Europeans. Now lots of their descendants are impoverished Argentinians and returning to Europe.

A large contingent of Welsh emigrated to Patagonia in the late 19th century when Argentina was keen to encourage anybody to go there. The Welsh were told it would be like the land of their fathers but when they got there it was just desert. There was no drinking water, crops failed and they had battles with the unfriendly locals. They must have missed the green green grass of home. They asked the British government to relocate them to the Falklands but were refused. Remarkably they did manage to establish a community and preserve the Welsh language and apparently a few thousand people who live there at the moment still speak Welsh.

Apparently quite a lot of Germans went to live in Argentina a few years before I was born, I wonder why!

Desi I agree with you about Brighton, but Brentford are doing brilliantly as well. And when you look how many players Southampton have sold in the last few years for big money, it makes me mad how much we wasted on rubbish.

👍🏾

As Brentford have been the club I wax lyrical about the most in 2022 I thought I should give Brighton some recognition too.

I went to the Brighton away game when McClaren was in charge ( awful game ), the stadium and the vibe I got from the club was one that this club is heading in the right direction and professionally run.

Did not expect them to have this level of success, they're certainly a mid table PL team with a healthy net spend, possibly have one of their best PL campaigns to date.

Along with losing Potter they lost their Head of Recruitment, Winstanley, who was replaced by Sam Jewell, son of Paul Jewell. Be interesting to see how he fares.

A load of Scottish citizens landed in a Argentina in 1978 and never went back.
