Sony Edge Controllers

Given that I cant comment on the other article thought I would create this one.

Pads are one of the things that I have forked out for so thought I should throw out my two pence worth here.

The price of the Sony Edge pads are very steep for what you pay for.

Over the years I have used the official Sony pads, Sony pad wiht the back buttons, Scuff pads and Battle Beaver pads.

From the ones that I have used the one that I liked the most and offered the best bang for your buck was the Battle Beaver pad.

Sony Edge is very overpriced at is base level compared to Battle beaver pad its also more expensive.

The pro's will use Battle Beavers also unless they are sponsored by another company (usually Scuff)

The Edge pad lacks features that other pads around its price point offer and for that reason there is no excuses.

From my personal recomendation if you are gonna fork out for a better pad 100% look at Battle Beavers .... the base price is cheaper than the Edge and also (can be costly) you can customise the look of the pad quite a bit. (not for me , too expensive).

For those who are sat on the fence about buying one I highly recommend you do the difference for me really helps.

For eg take CoD / Warzone. there is no way with SBMM I could do anywhere near as well without my pro pad. Being able to jump shot is essential. much like slide cancelling was clutch in Warzone 1.0.

My thoughts exactly - I feel Sony massively missed the mark with this one, and basically, they are competing primarily with themselves, the normal controller is one of the best pads I have ever used - the edge adds a lot of features that are software-based and should already be available on the standard pad, or when forking out a lot of money gives you a "cheaper" solution for fixing a problem that shouldn't even be there by replacing the sticks with tech that doesn't break, not making sticks that will fail replaceable. And again I feel this is being marketed to the gullible to be able to buy a sony branded "pro gaming pad" as seriously I don't believe anyone thinks a company like Sony are making a product for less than 1% of their demographic, that is just plain bad business.

they are also missing some features that should be on a pad at that price range.

lack of tension sticks for eg. It has pretty poor battery life also in comparison.

They are doing the ferrari thing and selling their name rathr than the product.

The must hope that consumers are not ware of the rical products that trump them.

I also agree that the Sony base pad is prob the best pad I have ever used that came as standard. If it came with back buttons I would happily stick with it.

I havent used them all but I have tried a few and Battle Beaver pads do stand out as being the best for me.

However I will also give a shout out to the XBox Elite pad. Very good value for money and Sony should without doubt shake their head when they compare their products and the price's.

ps from my time and experience playing there are a lot more people playing with pro pads than people realise.

Its certainly much bigger than 1%.

If you were to jump in one of my lobbies on CoD you would see large amount of players using some version of a more advanced pad. its easy to tell when players have back buttons available.

Granted thats a specific demographic you will see in these games but that demographic still exists and its higher than most think it would seem.

What I mean is I have seen multiple arguments saying this was designed for pro players/streamers hence the price which is BS, it's being marketed to the gullible

ahhhh i see yeah.

all of the pro's already know whats whats, there is no way they would use this product when there is better products out there for the same price or cheaper.

I 100% agree with you the people being targeted are those unaware of the other better products that are not marketed as well.

They have priced it at the top end of "pro pads".

your spot on that they are targeting the gullible and the ignorant players unaware that its poor value for money in comparison

There is 100% a market for these products including myself - but I have 0 interest with that price point and feature set. Even with the bells and whistle over 200 quid Vs 40-50 was always going to be a hard pill to swallow, with what you have it doesn't even really stack up against the original Elite which can these days often be bought for less than 100......and which isn't far off its original MSRP.

take the Battle Beaver pads, its a better product with more features. Id say they are at the top end of pads and you struggle to find any better.

Its what the pro almost all prefer (despite what they may say about their sponsored products).

But I cold jump on to thier site and get a better quality pad for about 30 quid cheaper than Sony's.

Sony product is arguably not as good as the Elite pad and like you said brand ew elite pads can still be found for around the 100 mark.

However I need to re-iterate the Xbox Elite pad is Very good value for money.

So much so that id say its the best pad on the market when it comes to bang for buck.

The reason I switched to a pro pad was a: to give me more of a chance against my peers.

b: new pads now cost 60 quid plus now anyway so the price doesnt hurt as much !

update on this....

I know someone who bought one.

after about a week of play he is getting about 4 hours out his battery. its defo designed to be plugged in.

Didnt realise that they actually reduced the battery pack in this pad with what they use on the vanilla pad.

it feels slightly better than the vanilla pad. the sticks feel ok, they have replacement thumb pads (no the the sticks but the pads) different sizes which is good.

the pad must be clipped in when plugged in so I can see a few peoples PS5's getting pulled of its table/shelf etc.

the thumbsticks had drift after 1 day of play though its minimal.

Yep - MS worked out years ago if you want a long cable quick release mechanisms are a god send, Sony decide to go the opposite direction and literally lock the pad in place. Again all the reviews have pretty much said the same - great pad, way too expensive......and then there is my criticism which is the software that a few said was a game changer should be baked into the OS as its nothing hardware related.

the pad feels good however. not top of the range but its good. lacks the tension sticks that you would expect to see at this price mark.

He isnt too fussed about the stick drift as this is inevitable with any pad and he can change them but surprising he noticed it after day 1 !

The adaptive triggers thing isnt really anything , its literally just a bit of plastic moving in to restrict the travel distance of the trigger.

onto the lock in cable thing, especially one that length....how many PS5 are gonna get pulled off their shelves etc by mistake cos the cable wont detach.

Apparantly the connection for the new battery and the port isnt the best which is why they force the lock in cable.

the back triggers he has feel very good.

The carry case you get with the pad was excellent.
