Cheltenham Town 2 - 3 Derby County

CHELTENHAM TOWN v DERBY COUNTY League 1 # 25

1500 The Completely-Suzuki Stadium Saturday 14th January 2023

More than half way through the season and all these unfamiliar names - Accrington, FGR and now Cheltenham.

15 games unbeaten and slowly but inexorably these draws seem to be turning into wins which is drawing us more firmly into those play-off places. But these performances can be fickle and we are never more than a defeat away from slipping out.

Another sell out for away fans tomorrow - anyone remember when we did not sell out the away end this season?

Didzy and Korey returned to training this week but Chester remains sidelined. Warne is warning against complacency as this is Cheltenham's biggest home game and like many teams this season they seem to raise their game against the Rams.

Team news:- Wildsmith (GK), Forsyth, Hourihane, Cashin, Barkhuizen, Bird (C), Collins, Mendez-Laing, Smith, Sibley, Knight

Subs:- Loach (GK), McGoldrick, Roberts, Thompson, Dobbin, Davies, Rooney

I’ll not survive another game like that to see it.

Need Wycombe to score and it will have been a great day.

At least you got the one goal difference.

Not sure it was worth the atrial fibrillation tho?

Man, that was a hard watch! We could and should have won easily but hey, this sort of game is always likely to cause an upset and before kick-off I wondered if our run might come to an end.

But a worldie goal and some resolute defending saw us through in spite of their eight-foot CB.

Wendies had two players stretchered off.

Oh dear, how sad, never mind.

Reflections: Town v Rams
Well as much as they caused us a few problems I thought Town were a bit of a one trick pony. ie, either hurling long throws or long balls into our penalty box in the hope that one of their big guys would get on the end of them.
They did it with a degree of success scoring 2 goals... but still ended on the losing side. Thankfully.
Not so long ago we'd have lost that or drawn. But 3 more goals put them to the sword... I including a worldie from Bird.
I thought the REF was too lenient and let many offences go. That said, we have 3 more points on the board putting pressure on those around us.
Well done Derby. Cheers. Terry. UTR

Thanks Terry. Looking relatively snug in the playoffs but still lots of season to go, and anything could happen. That said, with this run I am optimistic and we will continue to improve.

Its definitely a great feeling ( current run) and one Derby fans have richly deserved after recent turmoil. A mate compared this campaign to Jim Smith's , I'm not sure we're there yet. If we were to sign a Croat and switch to PW's favoured 532 formation then possibly.

Our recruitment is going to be critical. Who we can get in and what positions we'll be looking to cover. I can't see them all being covered by recruitment.

Recent interviews seem to imply RB is not an urgent priority given Smith, Rooney and Jason Knight can
all deputise if required.

On Radio Derby, I think it was Steele who suggested CB being a priority which I didn't agree with. And also the CF position.

We definitely need a CF who offers an aerial threat and a LB to cover for Sibley's suspension(s). Although Forsyth can play LB he should not be moved, Cashin and Forsyth have become our primary centre backs. Davies, Stearman and Chester when fit can all support.

A DM cover for Max Bird and winger to cover for N M-L are the other major priorities ( wouldn't mind the lad from Man City who tore our defence to shreds). Hopefully good calibre players are being made available for free transfer and on our new Analyst's database to recruit from.

PW strikes me as the type of manager seeking to build a similar camaraderie that N Clough did with rough gems. How we could do with a newsagent/scout to guide us.

I was also thinking it'd be a good idea to be n touch with Cocu and see if he has anyone in mind that could help us from the Dutch leagues. There's certainly some good quality in the second division.
