If say in football a ball goes over the

goaline, and then the goalie claws it back without it touching the ground, a goal is still deemed to have been scored. (Man United v Spurs a few years back excepted ).

So with that in mind, how is it acceptable in cricket for a player to grab the ball from behind the boundary line, and it be deemed a fair catch? The boundary line is there for a reason. If the ball hits the rope, it is deemed four runs. If the ball goes over the rope without touching the ground, is it deemed six runs.

Yesterday I saw one such incident where Stokes grabbed the ball from behind the line, juggled the ball, came back in to play, then claimed a catch. Basically this is tantamount to cheating.

It's a rule that needs updating.

I'm guessing that it dates back to the 19th century when it was regarded as undignified to hit a 6 and rarely came into play.

As I've said on the ashes thread the Batsman is punished twice which doesn't seem fair when the fielders had to bend the rules to get them out.

Pawl. Absolutely needs updating. Ridiculous rule.

In basketball the ball is not out until it touches the ground after going past the line. Players often jump out the court to retrieve the ball ad throw it back in. It's similar in cricket where it creates spectacular moments and ensures players don't give up chasing the ball.

Basketball is a ridiculous sport, so doesn't count. You expect that sort of nonsense with American sports. No point in having a playing area if that is the case.

Each game has its own set of rules and laws. It is ridiculous to try to apply the laws of one game to another.
Most ridiculous game for silly rules is Field Hockey, "Backsticks", "Turning", "Feet", "Lifting". Save it for the girls. They can probably understand it.

The ball has to be grounded over the line (or touch the rope) to be considered a boundary, unlike in football
