Derby County 1 - 2 Wigan Athletic

DERBY COUNTY v WIGAN ATHLETIC League1 #1

1500 Pride Park Saturday 5th August 2023

After a long, long, long absence from real life - football that is - hope springs eternal as look to make our mark on League 1. All plans go to pot once the first shot is fired after the initial kick-off and no-one can say even after pre-season friendlies how well we will be when it comes to the real thing.

to those who keep the thread ticking over in the barren months especially Desi with his excellent Summer Transfer News , not forgetting the launch of Banno's indomitable Prediction League - thanks. At least now I have a vague knowledge about new players coming in. Will still struggle though as I've been to just one pre-season - v Stoke City, where I was quietly impressed.

I will not be there on Saturday - Greece calls and I'll stand corrected but haven't Derby's first game in new seasons always been televised, albeit with a revised kick-off time?

Therefore please keep me informed .

I'm putting this out early as I just want to gauge the feeling of optimisim/pessimism about the new season. I still feel that many of us are still reeling from the last 3 seasons - happy that we still have a club but thinking WTF! did all that really happen?

This will be Paul Warne's squad, his team, his style and his formations. There will be more pressure - lets hope that the team deliver but in some ways the expectations are higher which will be added pressure.

So, dust off you keyboards, charge up your phones, learn to type again and put your comments acerbic, humourous, critical, Spartlike, intelligent or furious below.

See you on the other side.

Team news:- Wildsmith (GK), Forsyth, Hourihane (C), Bradley, Cashin, Bird, Collins, Mendez-Laing, Smith, Ward, Nelson.

Subs:- Vickers (GK), Wilson, Washington, Thompson, Elder, Robinson, Rooney.

Rob said he liked PW as a person and based on that, if he was a player, he would be inspired to run through the proverbial brick wall for him. But he did not rate the recruitment or tactics, especially the pushing of Bird further forward or the pushing of M-L into a more central role although it was extremely hard to tell exactly where M-L was supposed to be. He also questioned PW's matiness with his players and some of his public remarks which would have been better kept private which was a bit inconsistent based on his earlier comments.

Personally I think that all of this after just one game was over the top. Did he feel the same about PW at the end of last season?

After ten or more games we can fairly judge PW's management but I don't think we can ever question his recruitment for reasons I gave earlier.

What utter boll** Spart. You just love to hate him don't you?

Absolute truth Fin I'm sorry to say. If you think it isn't true show me the evidence. Our previous forays in to the third tier we finished higher than sixth in each season (4 in all) so didn't drop out of the top 50.

I don't hate PW at all. I didn't think it was worth sacking Liam Rosenoir and then dragging Warne from Rotherham. I am not a great fan of his style of football but he seems a decent bloke who talks a good game.

Thanks Chicago, Im getting far too lazy & forgetful in my old age.
I think when Rob was questioning the recruitment, he was talking about strikers such as Sharp & Rhodes which he accepted were speculation (hopefully).
Agree about the 10 games, wasnt that what Rosenior got ?

It's difficult to criticise the recruitment without knowing what the current restrictions are. Nobody seems to know for sure whether we can pay a transfer fee for example. The market generally seems a bit slow and there hasn't been much loan action yet, not surprising as the Premiership has yet to start. Once the teams in the top division have decided which players are surplus to their first-team squads there will probably be a bit of a cascade of players to the lower levels.

It's frustrating that we have begun the season while still short of what most of us would consider a competitive squad but there probably isn't a great deal that can be done about it. It's daft of course to draw conclusions after a single game, either about individual players or the manager, but we can never resist.

I'm not disputing the numerical facts just the absolute boll** of the conclusion you have drawn from them in terms of managerial ability. We all know the unique situation Derby have been and are still in so it's utter nonsense to try to draw such conclusions to get a rise out of people on here (most of whom can well see beyond it).
