There is one reason and only one reason Messi won this award and that is FIFA trying to get their grubby hands on the American dollar
----------------------------------------------------------------------
but FIFA did not decide the winner .... fellow pros and managers voted him the winner. this isnt eh Ballon D'or !
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Looks that way at face value, doesn't it. However, that does also seem to require a high degree of faith in FIFA not to rig a tight vote in order to achieve a particular desired outcome.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
like I said the only way it could be wrong is if the vote was rigged. but there is zero to suggest this is the case.

"People ignoring those criteria and making their choices on whatever criteria they fancy doesn't make them right at all."

"The fact that a lot of the voters seem to have difficulty taking that very simple idea on board doesn't make them right."

random statements that have zero authenticity or validity.

the award is for who players and managers think performed the best, there is no actual specific gauge or criteria. its who the pros thought performed the best therfore the only way the vote can be wrong is if its rigged.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Sorry, I actually missed this post of yours yesterday.

Those statements might have zero validity for you, but this is a discussion of opinions, not some high court that requires burden of proof.

It's your choice if you want to act as if you really believe those were the genuine grounds that all of those surveyed took into account for the award, but by doing so you come across as either a disingenuous liar, a blind fanboy, and complete idiot, or any combination of the three.

I think that also answers your latest post above. No, of course vote rigging isn't the only explanation for why Messi landed the award.

if you validate the statements that would be helpful.

unless you can provide evidence for this it will just remain a possibility rather than probability.

the past winners do not seem to carry your logic though. cos if it did the most marketable or similar would have won it and not Lewandowski for they two years.

if you can provide proof of your claims then you have a point otherwise its just a random claim.

ps there is only two possible outcomes... either the vote was legit and he won the award voted by his fellow pro's (you and I's opinion of who deserves to win it means absolutely zero as its not an award by fan votes)

we are not the ones that decide the vote.

so either Messi was voted the best by other players and managers or the vote was rigged. what other possibilities are there?

I’m sure the people voting were watching plenty of Ligue 1 and MLS football in 2023.

Daz, I'm not even sure many of his MLS games are factored in because of the cutoff date. Maybe it was the hat-trick against Curaçao that tipped the scales.

McWinston, you believe the voters all thought Messi was the world's best performing footballer for the time frame judged. You don't believe anyone conflated performances, voted on reputation, or allowed bias or personal agendas to influence their choices.

Fine, no point trying to convince you otherwise.

Sorry, just read the rest of the thread and saw that was covered.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yup.

Thoughts on Bernardo Silva, melton? What kind of back end of the season did he have?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Would have been a good shout. Personally I think Rodri was our player of the season last year and so far this one too. Got the goal in the CL final as well.

Hi Melts, thanks for that.

Yeah, Rodri did cross my mind too, but it's extremely difficult for a player in his sort of position to be recognised across the board. It's far more common for people to want to acknowledge attacking play - and I I include myself in that category too.

While the ensemble nature of City's game is what makes them such a formidable team, it also meant you supplied 6 of the 12 players shortlisted, and that's obviously going to split the vote of those who gave more weight to City's exploits. The fact that we've both given a name other than Haaland underlines that.

By the way, it isn't just the captains and managers. It's also the media and the fans. Per FIFA:

"Each of the four groups of voters within the jury has the same electoral weight irrespective of the actual number of voters in those groups (i.e. the votes of the coaches, the captains, the specialist journalists and the fans shall each make up one quarter of the poll, notwithstanding the number of voters in each group."

For your guide, Haaland won the coach and media votes (13+13=26 points). Messi won the player and fan votes (13+13=26 points). They each took second place in the groups won by the other (11+11=22 points), hence them finishing level on points (26+22=48 points apiece).

Yep completely understand why a player like him doesn’t win awards like this, just wish they would from time to time.
