Forget about City, Liverpool and Arsenal for this season. Is it realistic for us to get above Villa and Spurs and reach 4th at the end of the season?
The last 2 PL results have brought about a little more feel-good factor, but let's not knee-jerk and just forget everything that has happened before. However, as poor as we have been at certain times of the season, we still find ourselves in with a chance of sneaking 4th. Looking at the managers and the squads, should we be above those 2?
Our strongest side is probably Onana, Dalot, Varane, Martinez, Shaw, Mainoo, Casemiro, Bruno, Rashford, Hojlund and Garnacho. I know at times they have been poor, but maybe the last 2 games have given a glimpse of what they can do. I know Martinez is now out for a while, well as I have said in other threads, we just have to get on with it and we've played most of the season without him already. As long as we don't lose too many others, and let's face it, they have just started coming back so by the law of averages hopefully they stay fit.
I know Maguire has his faults etc, but I still feel it's a strong side and one that should be competing with most teams, and more than a match for Villa and Spurs. So it's up to ETH to get the best out of them and really prove his worth. There's a definite split as to whether ETH should stay or go at the end of the season. I have been more in the leave camp, although I accept that there may not be many options out there right now and of course we don't know what Ineos are thinking. But of course if he gets to 4th, alongside getting the team playing to somewhere near its potential, it makes the case to dismiss him less potent.
Can we really turn things around and properly get in that fight for 4th?

If the club started each game with the best outfield 10 it could at any given time during the season, then 2nd behind MCFC would have been a given.
But no, playing with the wrong choices, and also not using the better choices, has made a fair number of league positions look lopsided. Especially vis-a-vis the current over-achieving positions of both AFC and LFC. Neither of which are particularly strong by previous EPL standards.
Simple really.
The club's just got to get that bit right.
Mind you, not doing so does help to create the rather false impression of a "close title race".
All good fodder for the tabloidy plebs, I suppose
