What has happened to Spurs?

10 points off top, 8 points off Arsenal. How has this happened? Spurs are meant to be better than the has beens in those positions. How is this possible when you look at their squad?

Vicario - best GK in the PL this season
Porro - one of the best wing backs in Europe
Romero - best CB in the PL
Van Der Ven - Signing of the summer
Udogie - Best young left back in the world
Bissouma - One of the best holding midfielders in the PL
Bentancur & Maddison - World class midfielders
Son - one of the greatest PL forwards of all time
Kulusevski - world class attacker
Richarlison - Brazil’s £60M striker

And that’s not to mention the PL proven squad options of Royal, Johnson, Hojbjerg and Werner. So it can’t be the players. They are all too good.

Maybe the manager? The same manager who won trophies with Celtic and more importantly 3 time ‘manager of the mate’ awards since taking the PL by storm? Can’t be him either. It can’t be Daniel Levy because he brought Spurs this manager and all these incredible players. It can’t even be fixture congestion because Spurs went out of both domestic cups with a whimper and are not even competing in Europe this season.

So what is the cause of this? Why are Spurs so far off the leaders and looking destined to finish behind Aston Villa and crisis club United, when a matter of weeks ago, their fans had us thinking they were in a title chase?

Playing suicidal football with that backline was asking for trouble. They’ve not been able to scapegoat Eric Dier this season, though.

Haven't read the comments but always felt like they've been a little lucky. They're a dangerous side but they don't seem to have control for large portions of games, but they rarely get punished for it cos of Son and Vicario.

They got fackin lucky against us ffs😆

I just think spurs have been found out a bit. They went from managers like Conte, mourinho and santo, to a manager who plays front foot, high press, high line football. It took the league by surprise.

It doesn't help when you have immature players like Romero and bissouma getting suspended every other week.

Fair enough but even earlier in the season a number of your fans were pretty scathing of Saka for example and many of you were saying you weren’t playing well. After you lost to Fulham and West Ham in December I read quite a few posts saying that you couldn’t challenge for the title and were in a top four race. Now six weeks later you are going much better.

A lot can change in a short time.

Unfortunately, this poster is correct.....the problem is our manager, AusieGlue. He's a one trick pony and other managers have him figured out.
High line and attack,attack, attack.
So what do you do against that?

You park the bus, let Spurs boot the ball around from left to left to back to right to back to .....
and when you get the ball you simply boot it down field and run like hell and boot it past Vicario.
Alternatively, you get a corner and pass it in to your unmarked header.

Not hard to figure that out against an opponent who doesn't understand the word...."defend".

There is a combination of factors in play with Spurs at
the moment, i would say.

Firstly, the team has had a lot of disruption with injuries and players away and returning from intense international tournaments.

We clearly lack the same fluidity we started the season with. The weekend with both our FBs out, shows that we are still subject to a drop off when the first XI cannot start. That said, it rather typifies our season that we dont just lose one, we lose both, like we lost Maddison and VDV for months, in the same game. Mads is yet to get fully match sharp after 3 months out, same for Bentancur who missed 11 months.

It is also clear that the smarter managers out there have a decent plan for us. We do kinda make that plan quite easy for managers to formulate and apply. Set Pieces and counter attacks probably accounts for at least half the goals against in recent months. You can see in many examples that poor individual moment have cost us. Even vs Wolves, that 2nd goal comes from sloppy play by Bissouma on the edge of their box, then its not as if players didnt track back, they just didnt track runners. We had loads of defenders back, just not marking anyone. small details that should be more easily addressed.

Offensively we have scored 37 PL games in a row, the 2nd highest ever behind Arsenal's unbeaten season (55) so its not as if we have a massive problem scoring, BUT teams are making it harder and looking to counter. It's important that we take the lead in games but i would also say that while i am happy that we continue to go for the kill, we should be a bit smarter in looking to pick teams off as they look to try and get back into the game. There is now a sense that if teams stay in the game we will offer them chances and that is what we need to sort out a bit.

For me this has come from a drop off in the intensity of our high press, and I would put this down to individuals, general & individual fatigue and a lack of form of some players..

2 weeks off now. I hope we go and do some warm weather stuff somewhere, allow the players a bit of R&R as well as working hard on the training ground. We look like we need that bit of a refresh of body and mind. Our style of play demands intensity and concentration and it really shows when a jaded or returning player is few % below these levels.x

And just on some of the earlier comments, Arteta and Klopp managed 8th in their first season. The former was wanted gone by many fans for his first 18 months. Even now he doesnt have what most would consider a balanced squad, still lacking a quality striker.

So all this idiocy about where Spurs should be, and how this season is some sort of failure or underperformance is ridiculous.. There is clearly more work to be done on the pitch on the training pitch and in the transfer market, but this remains a very strong and promising start to Ange's reign.

Long way to go for 5th being CL, and there is still a chance that requires Arsenal winning it this year. I'm sure many Spurs fans would take Europa if it meant Arsenal didn't win the CL.

Let’s be honest you winning the cl isn’t something we have to worry about

The last two CL winners failed to win the last 16 first leg
(Real Madrid lost 1-0, City drew 1-1)
