Barnsley 2 - 1 Derby County

BARNSLEY v DERBY COUNTY League 1 #34

Saturday 24th Feb 2024, 1500, Oakwell, Barnsley

The Rams sit in second place ahead of the weekend's fixture with Barnsley just six points and two places behind in fourth, though the Tykes do have a game in hand.

There's a movement afoot - me and 5100 Derby fans migrating slowly up the M1 to Barnsley for Saturdays game v Barnsley. Not sure what we are expecting apart from a warm welcome (according to Scouse) from South Yorkshies finest.

And guess what? we're still literally still 6 points from the top.

Goal from Sibbz v Stevenage means of course that Sibbz is the new messiah and will have a resurgence of form for about 9 minutes on Saturday - that guy is so frustrating.

Is the midfield finally sorting itself? becoming more resiliant? more aggressive? more effective? Is Adams the final piece in the 3 piece jigsaw?

We are still 'just' winning games at home - I just wanna a clear and thumping drubbing of some team at PP to clear the sinusus and send a clear message to the league - maybe we will do this at Barnsley but that is away and so doesn't count.

Forgot to mention this new chap - Gayle - who has been touted as the new Kevin Hector - does this now mean Collz wont be playing?

We are also starting with an ex Barnsley academy player - Bobby Madley will be officiating, which is a comfort as he is a firm favourite amongst The Faithful.

Ang on GGGGGOOOOOAAAAALLLLL!!!!! duty

Feel free to add - just 399 to go

Team Wildsmith (GK), Hourihane (C), Bradley, Cashin, Bird, Mendez-Laing, Sibley, Elder, Adams, Nelson, Wilson

Subs: Loach (GK), Barkhuizen, Smith, Thompson, Fornah, Nyambe, Gayle

Joe Wildsmith not well before the game

In that case I take my criticism back View (although kicking is not W's forte at the best of times.)

I thought we were very unlucky to lose that game. We weren't at our best and we squandered a few situations but we were never put under any real pressure. The goals apart Wildsmith had no saves to make. We are down to the bare bones up front and it showed. Frustrating but if it came to it I would back us over 2 legs against Barnsley.

We missed Collins willingness to drop into midfield & help out to force the ball up the pitch

It was a make do and mend sort of forward line. Sibley was game enough but he doesn’t have the speed or physicality to trouble defenders in a scrappy game. NML also needs the ball to his feet so we had no real “out” ball from the keeper or defence and Barnsley were too good at pressing to allow us to play out.

I expected Warne to bring back Hourihane but not for the first time the game largely passed him by. I thought that any of the other midfielders available might have given us a bit more in that department. That said we largely nullified Barnsley and on another day could have been lauding Warne for setting up the team well to grind out a vital and hard-fought away win. The frustrating thing is that such an outcome looked very possible for much of the game. Yet again there is so little between most of the teams in this division. If you had no prior knowledge you might easily have been fooled into thinking this was a relegation six-pointer rather than a promotion one. Whoever gets one of the top two spots will get it by nicking these sorts of games rather than blowing teams away.

Did anyobe else think that the lino on the left was an utter and complete waste of space?

For him to signal a Derby throw-in, only to subsequently change his mind when looking at the ref was farcical.
