England Underachievers

Looking at the Mainoo post, there was a comment about certain players, who have been great or good for club but not so much for their country.
A number of reasons can be linked to this, like not enough game time (Fowler, Wrighty etc) , paying out of position (Scholes) even criticism from the press/fans which may have played a part (Barnes).

I was going to make a team but struggled with a few positions but looking back to the late 70's onwards, here are a few names who imo should have done better!

Francis
Hoddle
Barnes
Le-Tissier
Wrighty
Fowler
Cole
Scholes

Any more?

Some may scoff at Scholes but for his talent, and excellent early promise, including a hat-trick against Poland and two against the Scots, he peaked too early for England, unlike Utd.

Dunno, during the late 80s he was very successful. Never able to displace Shilton though.

Growing up watching both, I always thought Clemence was the better of the two.
I seem to remember them playing alternately for England and Shilton only really became first choice when Clemence retired from international football.

That bit was about Woods, but didn't Clemence retire from England with a fair few years left in him? Pretty much stopped playing for England when he left Liverpool didn't he?

Joe Cole? In fairness he wasn't consistently great in club Football.

I always thought Le Tissier was unlucky not to be picked more.

Little did I know that it was Bill Gates and the lizard people trying to silence him.

Ahh, sorry. Yeah, I remember Ray playing quite a while after retiring from England.

I always thought Rio (and Ashley Cole) were very good for England too.

Ashley Cole was brilliant for England, easily the most consistent performer of his generation

Didnt Keegan disappoint in tournaments? I recall hearing that somewhere on a podcast

he wasn't properly fit at WC '82

For Scholes, you can thank managers who were too scared not to play Lampard and Gerrard at the same time.
