Klopp’s successor

So it seems that Xabi Alonso has decided to stay at Leverkusen for one more season. I think at times it’s almost been taken for granted he would be at Anfield next season because on the face of it he seemed like the perfect fit. How do you feel about him now? Has he made the right decision?

To be honest I can’t think of a natural successor to Jurgen at all so I would be interested to hear your thoughts on what you think are the ingredients that make up a top Liverpool manager and who you would look to now to replace the almost irreplaceable Klopp next season.

Also what are your thoughts on the structure changes with Edwards on his way back and a new director of football in place soon?

Ultimately do you see success next season or a period of turmoil?

Over to you, and a Happy Easter to all!!!!

How would they be powerless when they have a contract with him? Any potential suitors would have to buy it out, no?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Of course they would, that’s obvious. They’re still powerless to stop him leaving though.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
They can refuse to listen to suitors and make him stay, which is what perhaps has happened here. They tell him to stay one more year and they won't stand in his way after that.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I don’t think you actually believe this is the case.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Why?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Because it’s very unlikely. If us or Bayern approached and Alonso wanted the move, it would happen without a doubt. Leverkusen would get their compensation but they would powerless to stop him leaving.

Only a very naive person would think that Leverkusen could force him to stay.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think you're mistaken there. They can absolutely stop him from leaving, it just wouldn't be in their best interests to do so and it would be detrimental to their own team.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It amounts to the same thing. You’re just being awkward for the sake of it.

My point was that since they can stop him from leaving, they might have offered him a deal where he stays one more years and then they will even help him leave.

Gotta think that the Liverpool job will be attractive to many managers? Obvs there's the pressure of replacing Klopp but surely someone will fancy their chances and that's the kinda man you'd want to come in

That's exactly what I said.

The one person hit most by Alonso staying at Leverkusen is Kane. He's not going to win the league for the foreseeable future.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not even with Klopp as manager?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't think Klopp will be jumping into a job like that, at least not yet.

Maybe the Germany job will become available this summer if they don't win the Euros. Might be a better fit for him.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The Germany job will be available in any case this summer.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I heard the German FA were interested in giving Nagelsmann an extended contract. I guess that may not happen if they underperform.

So not exactly then. For someone who rates themselves so highly that’s shocking attention to detail.
