Always a manager behind?

When we had Conte, I couldn’t stand the football we played. I couldn’t wait to never see 3 at the back again.
However, I can’t help but think that he would be tearing it up with this squad.
My issue with Conte was that he was trying to play 3 at the back with Davies, Dier, Sanchez and Lenglet (admittedly the players he had available and Romero was decent). He was also trying to play wingbacks with Royal, Sess and Davies.
I think he has also been proved right about Bissouma and his lack of defensive awareness.

If Conte had Porro and Udogie playing wingbacks and Dragusin, Romero and VDV, I think the 343 looks good. I think Ange is wasting Porro and Udogie by inverting them and it also leaves us wide open at the back.ive heard people say it congests the attacking areas and that hinders Son and Maddison - I can see that.

Our front 3 is still a massive worry in any system as Son, Richy, Johnson isn’t great and neither is Werner, Son, Johnson. Add Kulu to that and your looking at a very average attack(bar Son on his day, which are few and far between now as he’s getting on).

You could probably get away with any two of Bentancur, Bis, Sarr, Gray(maybe) in the 343but then you lose the playmaker role for Maddison and Bergvall.

So we’re currently a bit of a mishmash. Hence the bi-annual rebuild/ process/ project. And why we’re always a manager behind in terms of the squad. So the moral of the story is stick with a manager and give him the players he wants to fit his system. But in the meantime, I think the manager should be playing to the strengths of the players he actually has.

I’d love to see Udogie and Porro playing like full/ wingbacks for 30mins in a game to mix it up a bit. Or a back three if Maddison isn’t doing anything.

I think the problem we have is Ange is the manager and we all know that he likes to play a certain way and is stubborn as hell when it comes to changing it,,, mostly. (this is not an anti Ange post either)....

The players us fans crave and want will probably not work under Ange's system so I think we will have to wait and see what we have by end of the transfer window and take it from there.

The club of course will feck about through that window, standard. I am not convinced by any stretch to believe Levy has no involvement in transfers any more......... of course he does 100%
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I think people mis-understand Ange Ball.

"Playing a certain way" is more about the front foot approach, its about being positive in everything you do (with and without the ball), not passive, its about playing with these attitudes regardless of the score and the time on the clock. He puts no limitations on things - our targets will be to win everything until it is not possible to do so..... and i think this is what he sells to players and how we have got some deals over the line once Ange has "had a chat with them".

Within this there are plenty of changes he has made tactically that adapt to situations, some more subtle than others, but he doesnt yet have all the tools to pull this off effectively.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think there's also a misunderstanding regarding recruitment too. Everyone looks at the amount of goals we conceded and assumes we need to get more defensive cover to mop things up well but I think Ange sees things differently. If he's looking for new forwards it's because he wants players intent on pressing all the time so in a sense, defending from the front better. The biggest problem our defence has had is opposition players being given the time to get their head up and play long balls over the top. If we have strikers and midfielders willing to do the hard graft, they won't have the time to pick that perfect pass out. Defending starts with your attacking players, not your defence.

If we are a big club we go out and sign osimhen.

Onana is a fantastic signing for Villa but we should be able to go and take Neto from Wolves who have finanical problems with ease.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I just don't see it with Onana. He's way overhyped and massively overpriced. I'm not sure what he really does all that well. He's not someone that can dictate the pace of a game like Rodri. He's not someone that can make silky driving runs forward from midfield. He's not a goalscoring midfielder. He's not a creative. He's tidy and can play the odd square pass here and there but frankly, 50m? Nah, I'm glad we missed out on him.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I’m not sure how good Onana is but the point is that Villa wanted him and went and got it done.

Why are all Spurs signings “difficult” or “tricky”?

Defending in the opposition half, with the full backs playing in midfield is suicidal.

What Newcastle did to us, along with Wolves and a few others that I’ve forgotten, proves it.

No it's not risky, not if you have serious pressure on the opposition man with the ball. The reason our form dropped, aside from injuries, is because we stopped pressing as well as we did in those first 10 games.

You sound like you're anti-Ange. I don't think he's gung-ho in the same way Ardiles is. It's more about defending as a collective responsibility rather than just the backline.

It's crucial we have players up top with legs to play the way Ange wants us to, which is why I wouldn't want Chiesa anywhere near us. We can't afford passengers if we play a system which, I admit, exposes our defence. It CAN work, but only if everyone works as a cohesive unit. If the front players don't do enough off the ball, we're doomed. It's as simple as that. That's why he's so desperate to fine tune the squad in an attacking sense. It's bringing in forward players who can play the game without the ball well.

I think it's as much about the selling team as it is us. We can't move on them until they've signed their replacements.

I’m not anti-Ange, I’m pretty much in the middle. I definitely don’t think he’s the genius he’s made out to be.

I disagree about pressure on the ball from the attackers being the reason for our openness.

But like you, the drop-off in pressing after the first ten games was dramatic and definitely detrimental. But then, why did that happen? And why couldn’t Ange get them doing it again?

I just see him as another AVB. You want him to do well because he’s our manager and we want it to be different this time.

Villa have sold and will sell loads of players though, they sold Douglas Luiz to get Onana. They did the PSR deals. Duran is being sold to West Ham. Diaby went to Saudi.

That 2 first team stalwarts they have flogged and Onana is the only starting player they have brought in - so it could be argued they are weaker currently.

We’ve just stood still but then so have Arsenal, City, Liverpool, Newcastle

Euros has pushed things back big time I think

Big season for Ange - if there is no clear improvement he won’t be here next season and Levy’s next stooge will step in.

I’m confident though that we will play decent football, finish in a euro spot and have a few chastening defeats along the way. If he goes all out in the cups then I will be over chuffed

I just think you could set a non league team up against us thats how poor the tactics are.

We push too high up but not as a unit so constantly end up with just two centre backs in position and everyone else chasing and we are reliant on sideways passing and individual brilliance.

You can exploit us in just three passes.

do any top teams play 5 at the back these days
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes, and sometimes 6 or 7.
Football is a fluid sport.lineups change wit the game.
The kick-off line up has little to do with strategy.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Conte and Fluid...2 words never seen before in the same sentence
----------------------------------------------------------------------
to be accurate, I did not mention Conte!
