Bordeaux R.I.P.

The great French side is no longer

They are famous for the great team in the mid-80s with Giresse, Tigana and Battison that were so successful for France as well. The perhaps unfortunately named 'keeper Dropsy, the prolific German striker Dieter Muller. They won 3 titles between 83/84 and 86/87.

Unfortunately, after the success in the 80s they fell into financial trouble and were relegated by the French FA. Every cloud - Zinidine Zidane, Christophe Dugarry and Bixente Lizarazu all came through and helped Bordeaux back to the top of the French game, culminating in them winning the 98/99 title. Sylvain Wiltord was the main man, scoring 22. The likes of John Micoud, Lillian Laslandes and Ali Bernarbia all contrbuting.

A further title came a decade later in 08/09. A certain Moroccan striker led the way - Marouane Chamakh netting 13 times.

COVID proved disastrous for Bordeaux, with relegation from Ligue 1 following in 21/22 amid financial problems. They were close to folding a year ago but managed to hold on - with talks over a takeover by FSG looking possible. When that collapsed this week it was curtains for Bordeaux.

Always sad to see a team fold. R.I.P. Bordeaux. I'm sure you will be back.

It happens a lot in footy, look at Man City, decades in the lower leagues floundering around and then they bought a few titles which they will get stripped of soon.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
yes has happened a number of times to big clubs who then started again in the amateur leagues

Napoli in Italy
Real Oviedo in Spain
Strasbourg in France

all examples of clubs usually in the top flight who've gone bankrupt & restarted

This is a bit different, though. I don’t think those clubs ever gave up their professional status.

Rangers in Scotland.

They stayed professional though in the lower leagues, playing against a bunch of rank amateurs.

They still do, tbf.

CSKA Sofia and Steaua Bucharest (now FCSB) it happened to as well, both clubs are fighting with another club for their own status (CSKA 1948 & CSA Steaua București)

Any good players worth free transfers then?

Liverpool should be held accountable here. Pulled out of buying them and then they go bust? Smells like Carillion to me.

It is funny on Twitter where people are saying Liverpool (well FSG) purposely bankrupted Bordeaux so they can some 17 year old they would have been easily able to sign anyway
