Worst XI

In a match, much is made of a club's First XI. But what about their Worst XI? The players across the Premier League era who, if grouped together, would give you nightmares?

Arsenal are not immune to horror shows of poor signings, underperfomers and simple bad eggs. I've listed my group below:

Almunia - Maybe not actually our worst keeper - Richard Wright was pretty bad - but he was given years to perform and always managed to let the club down. I remember a game against West Brom where he simply couldn't do anything right - probably his lowest point. Nowhere near good enough to be our starter.

Sokratis - Was supposed to help strengthen our defence but we were weaker for having him. Clumsy, immobile and combative in the wrong way. The longer he went on, the worse he got. One we bought when we insisted on going cheap - ironically it probably cost us.

Silvestre - I truly hated Silvestre. He was a prime example of us buying a castoff from a rival when he was past his best. Paired with the emergence of Fabianski (who wasn't terrible but needed the right players around him), he highlighted a particularly bad period in our history not long after we'd won silverware for the last time in what would be a long time. I can't think of a single thing he ever did right.

Rob Holding - Fundamentally I don't think Holding was a terrible player, he was just playing a division too high. Even squad players need to be relied on and he proved repeatedly that he couldn't be, especially against Spurs in his last season. But once Saliba was injured and Holding stepped in, the gulf was obvious.

David Luiz - Another player I grew to hate for similar reasons to Silvestre. You don't buy a has-been your rivals are willing to part with freely. Luiz was probably more frustrating because in the age of VAR he was painfully slow to learn that he couldn't get away with his dirty tricks anymore and he cost us too many penalties. A liability through and through.

Källstrom - Who acquires a player, even a loanee, with a pre-existing injury? Källstrom was a decent player in his heyday but he spent too long being a passenger because he came to us crocked, and I can't think of a meaningful contribution he made.

Sambi Lokonga - He was never going to be a long term solution for any of our problems. Lokonga never seemed to have the right attitude and always seemed soft for a midfielder of his role - he was reminiscent of the bad old days when we had a team loaded with kids, has-beens and passengers. Never a good fit and him leaving was probably the best result for all concerned.

Mykhitarian - Sanchez might have been a wantaway but you need to replace a player of that calibre with someone in the same league, and Mykhitarian wasn't it. He may have been good at his best and in the right team but at Arsenal neither were the case. Dwindled through his stay and I couldn't even tell you when he left without checking because it was clear he wouldn't be a huge loss.

Nicolas Pepe - More a victim of his price tag than anything else, but even without that pressure he was truly a one trick pony - pace and no real end product. People pointed to the goals he did score - especially a couple of free kicks - as vindication, but he never gave us anything we couldn't have otherwise got from someone else. Frustrating to watch and our biggest transfer bust ever.

Gervinho - He might not have cost nearly as much as Pepe but he was an utterly useless player and my heart sank every time I saw his name on the team sheet. His finishing was as bad as anything I've seen in any league and along with Silvestre he is probably one of the two players I like the least out of any we've ever had.

Sanogo - We persisted with Sanogo for I don't know how long, and more importantly, I don't know why either. Despite his size he was not some tough old-fashioned centre forward and even his link-up play was awful. He made Francis Jeffers look like Alfredo Di Stefano and my only regret about him leaving is that he didn't take more underachievers with him. A total loss.

Some of those are probably controversial to you, but that's the beauty of an opinion - it's not necessarily right, it's just what you think. So as far as a Premier League Worst XI for Arsenal (or another team) goes, who makes your sheet?

Mikel had 372 appearances in a decade-long Chelsea career where Chelsea had a lot of success. You're really saying he was one of your worst signings ever?

Didn't see the other comments. Scratch that.

I would wager its like a mctomminay type situation for utd. he's nearly played 200 games for them now and most their fans hate him

The hard part of the Chelsea line up is finding room for all of the strikers.

Hell even Enzo for being 100m, rubbish and then coming out as racist seems like a better shout than Mikel

Ah yes that’s a brilliant shout. I’ve tried however to include players that brought me the most pain and luckily for us bakayoko and other flops didn’t play too long
