International Interest

I wonder if the dissolution of the Great Britian side has hit international Rugby League interest.

I know we only played Wales yesterday but GB RL used to be well followed. I will be interested to see how well attended the Australia and NZ games are. Think Hull will be close to a sell out but i remember us playing to full houses at Wembley.

Maybe not this time but next who knows.

I can understand people wanting a national identity and maybe it helps develop players who otherwise would not have the chance which should stregthen our game, just think that GB seemed to get more interest and we should do a Lions tour definitely.

I believe we should have a touring team as great britain,at the moment england would be 90% of the team, but look at the past when we had a great britain team which contained great welsh players, john bevan, john deveraux, jonathan davies, etc and as league leader says it would only encourage players from their respective countries to emulate great britain stars and can only help progress of home grown players and we may not have to rely on players like chris heighington and rangi chase who are not home grown,at least jack reed and gareth widdop were born in england.!

I think home internationals is healthy for the game but a tour should be mixed, because down the track we don't want to see any great individuals sitting at home when they could be contributing in a Lions team.
A Lions team playing down under seems to generate more of a passion when we have got a large contingent of Irish and Scot's here, the banter is always lively in every pub/club on the east coast of OZ....cheers.

I was brought up on the excitement of the tours,Wednsday night at Leigh and the following Saturday at Wigan. This went on for over 30 matches in Lancashire,Yorkshire and Cumbria.
Watching the Aussies we used to marvel at the speed and athleticism of them, brown legs and all.
But even after all that we used to win a fair few matches including the tests, and the Aussie supporters must have had the same feelings as we had when we went over there.
I dont think we could ever get back to that level of matches played ,but the excitement of watching your own club play the tourists was magical.

All the while the NRL and SL seasons are played at the same time as they are now there is no chance what so ever of going back to the tours of the past.
If and its a big if, that Professional Rugby League returned to a september may season it might happen, but i can't see that happening in my lifetime.
