The form of the forwards is a concern. Seems like teams can sit deep and that's enough to make us run out of ideas. Midway through a game I wouldn't be averse to us switching it up by getting Diaz and Salah to switch wings and tell them to just get to the byline and cut the ball back for a (hopefully) on rushing Nunez for a tap in.

If Diaz is getting chalk on his boots on the right wing it should in theory also create more space for an inverting Trent. Not saying we play this way all of the time but it just gives the opposition something different to think about.

There's a little narrative forming on Twitter (I know...) that Klopp is doing to Szoboszlai what he did to Gini and Keita - disciplined runners. I don't buy into it, I think he's just hit a blip in his form tbh.

Aah Twitter. So that's where it's coming from. Kash just regurgitates Twitter nonsense then.

I don't use Twitter. Eye test tells me everything.

I miss the days when we had a fluid front 3 of Mane, Firmino and Coutinho. We were electric and teams had no clue where each player was playing. Just mix it up a bit Klopp why not if nothing else is working.

Nunez has been absolute crap the last 6 weeks. I'd bring Gakpo in for him against Arsenal.

When is Jota back? Maybe we should look to put Nunez on the left and let Gakpo play false 9.

Thought Jota was back out running again? Surely he’ll want to come back against his favourite team Arsenal. Always scores against them.

Diaz is clearly missing Robertson as well. They had a good understanding at the start of the season and though he tries hard, Kostas just isn't up to Robbo's standard.

Those days are done, sad as it is.

We went four up front yday and it wasn't working, till Jones and Elliot came on. Hadn't really thought about it till now, but we switched to a 4-2-3-1 at that stage:

Salah
Jones - Elliot - Gakpo
Endo - Trent

I would be happy with that going forwards, feels like the only way to utilise Elliot (as a 10) and Szoboszlai would take Gakpo's place in the above line-up, offering overlap and also crossing from the right. At the moment, Nunez is having to play the 'Firmino role' because he has two inside forwards cutting-in all the time. We might start to see a different player if we start having Trent crossing from deep and Szoboszlai from the right.

Gakpo on the left of the three would also work well I think. This feels like the post-Salah formation I think. It's also what Klopp used to play at Dortmund.

We were never going to get the balance right in half a season especially with our midfield as unbalanced as it is. This is our team and it's level at the moment

We were able to do that because of a strong midfield, which is what Klopp is working on now IMO. Remember that it never really came together until we signed Fabinho.

Sounds about right. Lost to Leeds of all teams last season. Also Madrid in the CL. Can't remember which is more recent. Before then it had been about 3 years since we last lost a league game.

Nah, lost at home to Leeds in the league and Madrid in the CL last season.

Probably around 25 or so I'd guess since the Madrid game.

Madrid was more recent. Think its less than 49..

My issues with the inverted system are well documented. Every man and his dog now saying tTAA should play midfield but Klopp will never do that because of ego IMO. Last two games we brought on Gomez and moved TAA more to the middle and it worked well.

Many will disagree but IMO inverted system makes it harder for us to penetrate teams, not easier. It's makes us easier to penetrate, not harder. We also have Salah on that side so the only defence is usually Konate or Matip coming across and leaving more gaps behind him. Maybe it will work better when we sign a DM but for now I just don't understand why Klopp is doing it.

Nearly every game the opposition is just pinging balls deep into the right side. If it's not a weakness then the other teams are very stoopid. You target your opponents weaknesses. We have players, pundits and managers openly saying it's our weakness. Everyone targets our right side. They must all be mad.

I've said before, any team can exploit our defensive frailties because of the inversion. The system is flawed and we don't have the players to cover for those flaws. USG were getting in behind us like a joke. Drop the inverted bullsheet and keep everything else the same IMO.

Diaz has definitely suffered from Robbo being out but at the same time doesn't look anything like the player he was before his injury. Yard of pace has gone.

posted on 18/12/23

Diaz and Robbo never worked like Mane and Robbo but because Diaz was a free spirit we were happy for him to beat his man and the one after because he could with ease. Issue now is that he can't even outskill Antony.

It took Van Dijk a year and half of playing to get over his injury

I think it’s fairly noticeable that Tsimikas is not getting forward as much these past four games and I suspect that’s because he was getting done for recovery pace. We’re more solid as a result, and it also helps VVD, but it means that Diaz is easier to double up on.

None of our forwards are in any kind of form though. Gakpo has dropped off a cliff and it was a high one anyway.

Fair point this actually

Maybe switching the midfield to have Szob on the left next to Diaz will give us another threat without Tsimikas needing to be the player to provide it.

Salah looked very isolated yesterday also, seemed to very rarely have the ball in a situation where he could do much with it.

Just a really bad day at the office all round.
