60s setting would be fine, but if you're supposed to root for Bond surely him being a chauvinist still would just make uncomfortable watch for a lot of people?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Only for the offended by everything minority though. That's how Bond has always been. Even Craig's Bond, particularly in Casino Royale when he says to Vesper that she wasn't his type as he only went with married women. Or when he doesn't register any emotion seeing the body of the girl he bedded the night before.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Isn’t he supposed to be a high functioning sociopath?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't think so. Watch On Her Majesty's Secret Service where he falls in love and gets married. After that movie he's lost his true love and finds the chauvinistic approach to women more convenient and suited to his lifestyle I guess. Although he was doing that anyway in the previous Connery movies
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Diana Rigg would have been huge high maintenance...he'd have binned her as Mrs Bond inside 6 months

Craig's Bond is clearly all front in this department though. It's one of the things that actually makes him quite different from the others. If that's not the intention Craig's acting is off.
The womanising trait of Bond is meant to enhance the stylistic nature of the character, like the cars & gadgets, not be a character point (way I've always seen it anyway). And hence moving forward, as Bond adapts with the times, he'll be less overtly chauvinistic as that becomes less "cool".
If Bond was to become more obviously chauvinistic it would be hilarious if it was a woman. Completely flip the script

Good listen.
Their synopsis is that Bond reflects the behaviours of men in their time, Connery is a hard drinking, openly chauvinistic bottom slapper, Craig knows he's damaged and deals with his toxic masculinity via alcohol, violence and patriotism.
& Roger Moore just joked through his films...the70's were pretty much a joke time

Yep. James Bond is a time capsule, not just the character but the films in general.
Craig's Bond being a modern interpretation of a past story already told couldn't sum up this time period any better. The final No Time To Die trailer coming out a week before Matrix 4's first trailer a nice on the nose example of this
I don't consider Bond to be a toxic male to be honest, I find the need to shoehorn him into contemporary woke parlance kind of lame and boring. Instead he is simply a flawed character whose fallabilities are outlined in the source material.
Anyway, saw No Time To Die this morning.
It is going to divide a lot of people I suspect.
As for Obelix's weird left wing tangent about people being snowflakes for pointing out political agendas, I think he should meet Mr Kettle.
