I suppose it's Sci-Fi even though it's a comedy so I'm going to give a shout out to Galaxy Quest. Great film.

3 pages in and we still seem to be missing a lot of big names, both all-timers (planet of the apes) and last 20 odd years (under the skin). but in terms of lesser names we could have:

timecrimes
triangle
phase iv
silent running
invasion of the body snatchers (1978)
the man who fell to earth
starman
the day the earth stood still (1951)
the day the earth caught fire
donnie darko
predestination
looper
moon

depending on our definitions i'd also throw in being john malkovich and escape from new york, but they may be pushing it a little. as, surely, is eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, though technically it relies heavily on a sci-fi cocept and technology.

Don't think anyone has mentioned any of the Mad Max movies either.

The fact that nobody has mentioned Battlestar Galactica (2004) as one of the greatest sci fi series of all time is an absolute crime.

Star Wars is to sci-fi what Lord of the Rings is to fantasy.

I’ll go, in order:

Alien
Bladerunner
The Matrix
The Empire Strikes Back
T2

Interstellar is great til it gets a bit mushy at the end

Alien/aliens top by miles. Arrival is very good.

Dune (the reboot) is absolutely epic, such a great design, could teach Disney’s star wars a lot.

The thing- still the best and most outrageous practical effects I’ve ever seen. It’s unrivalled.

The fifth element.
Forbidden planet
Alien

Didn't really like star wars.

I find your lack of faith disturbing.

of those i've not seen listed yet:

soylent green
a scanner darkly
thx 1158
district 9
planet of the apes (1960's)
enemy mine
repo man
ghost in the shell
dark star
logan's run

and of course.. the grandaddy of them all.. Metropolis.

a bit of a stretch for sci-fi.. but worth a shout out... children of men.

and a complete stretch.. but since it's technically about an attempt to be included in the golden record's put on the voyager probes.. i think it can just squeeze in.. Troop Zero.

Not seeing a lot of love for Contact which is clearly the best.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Contact is great, especially the early stages. I know a lot of people criticise the "reveal" but I always say it was going to be difficult to live up to so interesting a premise.

Might have been the first film in which I saw Matt McConaughey as well.

The first 2 Cloverfield movies are good. Remember seeing the first Cloverfield at the cinema, was a great experience.

I'm sure I've said this before in a similar thread, but I always think the 2002 adaptation of The Time Machine, with Guy Pearce and Samantha Mumba, is very underrated.

I love its depictions of the far-distant future, and of course it's a great story.

28% on Rotten Tomatoes is an absolute travesty!

Original was better, and the book even better than that, but I hear you, it’s not a bad movie at all.

I remembered fondly and then tried to watch it again. It was kinda bad and a snooze fest.

Is Minority Report classed as sci-fi?

If so, this is one of my favourites.
