Have to do an underrated thread!

For what it's worth, imo Drogba is properly rated. Never really in contention for the best ever PL teams but in that group below, along with the likes of Van Perise and Ruud.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If Ruud and RVP are the group below who’s in your top tier?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Erm

Shearer, Aguero, Henry, Suarez (tho lack of longevity)
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Kane?
Rooney?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Neither quite up there for me. Rooney faded in his mid 20s, Kane while prolific was never as unplayable as the rest imo.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Rooney had a decade at the very top tier of football. Kane is still in it.

So you think both belong in the top tier?

Dunno why people have Owen in the 2nd tier, never got 20 league goals in a single season throughout his career

Even Hasselbaink managed that three or four times

Yeah premier league only, Owen falls well short. Did though have a very good record for England.

Whether I think they do or not is irrelevant. Their goal scoring records suggest they were / are.

Rooney ticks every box possible for being really, really good and should be nowhere near this list

I think I would rate Vardy ahead of Drogba as a PL striker.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

There have been some utterly stupid comments on here but this one has to be one of the very top drawer of that category.

Why exactly?

Owen didn't get over 20 league goals in a season but he's unlucky in that respect because of the amount of games he played. Four of his Liverpool seasons he played less than 30 games and got close to 20 in 3 of them. He would surely have got over 20 multiple times were it not for injury or whatever was responsible for him not playing more.

Yeah Rooney if anything is weirdly underrated.

Partly because the expectations were so high and the fact he’s English.

For being overrated that is
I find as his career has gone on he’s switched from being seen as such an ‘underrated’ and ‘under appreciated’ player (which was probably true at one point) now sometimes it seems to switch and people in an attempt to lift him up, put him above the level he’s at.

Giroud is vastly underrated.

He’s Frances top scorer ffs

World Cup winner, CL winner and scorer of some absolutely incredible goals. One of the best first touch finishers the game has seen.

posted on 25/3/24

I don’t want to seem like I’m denouncing all those achievements, because it’s not I think Giroud is a bad player. He is a good striker and has had a successful career. But I think it’s that sort of defensiveness of Giroud over the last few years that leads to me think he’s overrated.

Many players have won world cups, Champions Leagues and scored nice goals, but don’t necessarily have clamour to their name about how underrated they are.

Even this France thing..controversial I know but I do always think this 🤷🏿‍♂️ Giroud is lucky he has been able to play so much for such a strong and dominant French team in an era where Benzema, a much better player, has not been able to be picked at all essentially, and a manager who has his clear favourites and will play them to the end. Mbappe, who’s been playing wide during this time, is coming to that record at a much quicker rate and will overtake in a year or two.

posted on 25/3/24

Like I said, a good striker and good career. He is also a player who spent several years at Arsenal not quite being good enough to be trusted as the main starter, and was also a squad player for us (albeit a useful one). He’s definitely shown himself again to be a good starter at a top team in Milan last few years, but even on this thread..he’s been mentioned in same breath as Drogba..they’re different levels for me.

Yeah? Name three.

If anyone was saying Giroud was an elite world class striker, you’d have a point, but they’re not.

This is my point with Cantona. Exceptional player, brilliant trekkers, strong, could score goals.

The way Utd fans go on about him you’d think he was their best player in history when in reality he’s nowhere near… hence him being overrated.

I think in 20+ years, people may look back at Giroud see some of the goals her scored and the things he won and massively overrate him

Wouldn't argue with much of that Robbing but what he also brought which was needed around that time was character and leadership, a good few of the squad probably looked up to him and took direction, to be fair that's what I love about football, we can all have varying opinions on teams, players, managers etc and we can al be right if it's and opinion based belief

Yeah, and I do get that, but on this very thread you’ll see people denigrating, or trying to, VVD who had a ridiculous galvanising effect on the team. People pick and choose.

Regardless though, Cantona was and is no King, I doubt he’d even make their top five best players and as such is actually vastly overrated by Utd fans imo.

I saw a fair bit of VVD at Celtic and knew he was destined to move quickly and go to a bigger league, always thought he was a world class DC, people sometimes do find it difficult to set aside club loyalties when judging other teams players, fair enough I just judge what I see as I'm sure a good few others on here do as well

That character and leadership - there's no stats for that so it sends fan boys into a tailspin. Guys that do there work behind the scenes as well as the pitch. Guys that take a yellow at the right time. Guys that stand up to the other team's best player. Guys that know what to say and when in the ref's ear. Guys that see a player struggling and make an extra effort to give or take an easy pass to get them going again.

Love it.

................

He is rated exactly as he should be, by the vast majority of United fans.
