Are we seriously debating the neutrality of Media Pundits when in the biggest game for a decade Beaton was Ref and Walsh VAR? 🤣

Scott Wright wasn't even close to being one of the worst players for us in the first half but he's still nowhere near good enough and given the issue Tavernier has with Maeda I would be looking at having Sterling RB away to Celtic with Tavernier up one.

He could terrorise Taylor if he wasn't being terrorised by Maeda.

Obviously having Sima back and Matondo doing his best to force his way into the team over recent weeks it's not necessary in the other fixtures.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't think we will see Tav move position but can foresee in the next one Sterling starting in the wide right position. The big man is a machine and would basically give us a player in 3 positions as he could tuck in to midfield to make a 4 on the right side and drop back to let Tav overlap as well as playing his starting role.

I think he would have started there yesterday if Ridvan was fit
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Definitely more likely and will effectively be able to become the RB when Tav goes forward.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Don’t think having Sterling as wide right helps, it’s on the counter against Maeda Tav has most of his problems.

Would go with Sterling as third central midfield over Lawrence/Cantwell away at CP. Our attacking midfielder seems to struggle in these games and think a clear 3 vs 3 would help against them.

Would also allow Sterling to help Tav more similar to how Jack used to sit in when Tav attacked under Gerrard

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Think the reason for me I'd have him there is he can effectively get across 3 positions with his athleticism. He can play wide right whilst but when we don't have the ball tuck in to the midfield as an extra body as well as cover Tav when he goes forward. He's not a winger by any means but gives you various options on and off the ball in that area.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

You can’t play wide right and cover for the right back. Just wouldn’t work.

Your saying play wide right but cover when Tav goes forward - can’t do things at once. Would simply leave us without a wide right.

He can definitely play there, no question. But can’t help Tav given the problem he had with Maeda is generally on the counter
----------------------------------------------------------------------

You can, it can be fluid. Tav goes forward he sits in. No different to when Souttar goes on a wee adventure and Lundstram tucks in.

At the moment I think a lot of Tav's forward play is nullified because he's stuck between being able to go and keeping an eye on Maeda behind him. Shouldn't be too difficult for the two to interchange and make sure Tav can go with the confidence there are enough legs behind him on the counter.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Tav and candias used to do that

On the odd occasion maybe, but only ever seen it consistently with Jack/a cm under Gerrard.

Having a rw that tucks in simply means you don’t have a rw. It’s pointless.

And does nothing to help where Tav has been weak in these games.

Anyway back to the title race.

As much as I obviously would have preferred the win yesterday to essentially make the next old firm less decisive it does make for a genuine neck and neck last round of games.

It's exciting and I'm looking forward to each game. It's been a long time since we've had that sort of end to the season

unlucky MATE i've been saying he's been off the boil all season.

on a serious note, i can think of at least 4 really poor instances of clearing / passing, 3 of which have cost u goals against us, thats not including just overall bad positioning and ball watching.

I do think we have a genuine problem in defensive positioning as a whole, not just tav and have done across 3 different managers now with the same personel.

For me you expect your lead CB to organise your defence positions during the game and that's why I think we need 2 new ones.

posted on 8/4/24

With Tav you have to take the good with the bad.

If he was a spotless defender who produced double figures goals and assists every year he would have been here for a year before getting a big move back to England and would be an International.

For our level he's as good as we will get and has been a fantastic player for us. What he might lack at times he makes up for at the other end, you just have to accept that.

posted on 8/4/24

he's lost you more old firm games than he has won.

easily surely?

i'd like to thank him for his contribution to our success.

I’d have had Tavernier in our side any day of the week.

Compared to most of our right backs during that time he’s a no brainer.

posted on 8/4/24

Don't think he's ever lost us any games individually? I can think of a late error in the game we had at Parkhead with 10 men but equally Morelos getting sent off first half was probably more damaging than his late backpass.

Other than that can't think of any games he's cost us. Can think of plenty games he's won for us over his time here though.

Yeah was just thinking is there anyone I'd swap him for in the time he's been here. Johnston I think is your best RB in that time and as good an athlete as he is I'm not sure I see him ever producing the kind of numbers Tav has.

Given finances will be tight and we need a few players I'd keep Balogun another year and have him as the backup to the backup and try get some money for Davies given he's rated in the Championship.

Need a new starting CB and it could be ahead of either Goldson or Souttar for me, hopefully the scouting team have a gem somewhere.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

I wouldn't rush to move Goldson or Souttar on as think they have a part to play. But gone should be the days where Goldson is first name on the teamsheet and guaranteed starter for 60 games.

We also need to think about whether we are prepared to invest in King and if so give him plenty of games and allow him to develop and make mistakes along the way. But yes if we can move Davies on I think we could upgrade for similar money and less on wages given what he will be on. I'm not against keeping Balogun an extra year but we haven't been as ropey defensively for a while as we have since probably the break with the higher press. Motherwell and Hibs caused us loads of problems in transitions and Celtic took 3 off us without really ever really having sustained periods of pressure in the final third.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
On a serious note, when you have two behemoths in a wee diddy country who can afford, nay, need to shop abroad because there is just not the home grown talent available, then young guys leave because they are never getting a game and the diddies that stay like poor King are kept out the team but can't go on loan cos they're needed for home grown squad numbers in Europe.

It is partly a consequence of our abnormal country situation but players suffer because of it. The alternative might be the two teams hoovering up ALL the best talent but that solves nothing as the standard of competing teams will drop and it would cost money they'd be reluctant to spunk.

It feels like another of these rules designed to help bring through talent but actually hinders it.

Much like the rule we used to have about 2 under 21 subs

Looks quite ridiculous given Walsh, Beaton, Gallagher, Madden etc all said it’s a pen

Never mind that they’ve said goal being ruled out is most judgemental

Shocker bobby madden thinks those things.

As i said earlier, he thought clint hilla challenge on griffiths was fine.
