Seems a bit draconian. Although smoking is an absolutely disgusting habit. Cigarettes are not even tasty like beer. I’ve never understood why anyone could enjoy inhaling all that shiiite into their system.

or smell like a facking ashtray

Christ, you two sound like fun. I bet you're the type to turn up, have two shandies and then leave the pub at 9.00pm because you've got some sort of park run on the Sunday morning.

Zzzzz. I used to smoke and on a night out I still get totally arrrseholed and there's absolutely nothing with that. What has happened to this country? Being a bit reckless every now and then is fun, y'know.

The underground tobacco industry which will lead to rampant crime and murders ready to kick off then. People will still smoke.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
from the little i heard it wont be illegal to do so? just illegal to buy it?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Will lead to the same effects mostly.

So the best thing to do is tax the shiiit out of it. Legalise weed and other drugs that aren’t dangerous, tax them. Therefore put a load of cash into the countries coffers.

A cigarrette and a glass of red has gone from one of lifes pleasures to a guilty pleasure to soon being banned
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Imagine how great it will taste if it gets banned though!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Very true! Smoking and drinking go hand in hand.

I don't smoke normally but drinking is all the more enjoyable with a ciggy. Vaping doesn't cut it
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Vaping is for morons.

Anyway, for those people who enjoy a cigarette and glass of wine (why ruin a good wine?!), they will still be able to do so.

It’s an interesting direction as the OP mentions. Sugar? Salt? At the same time we talk about decriminalisation of illegal drugs.

I haven’t looked at the numbers but I would imagine that the number of smokers generationally are getting fewer and fewer. It appears to me that less young people smoke now than did in my day at similar ages.

It’s not advertised anymore, it’s not really done on TV and movies by ‘cool’ characters as much as it used to.

Would it take care of itself as we are?

Do gen z even think about smoking ciggys? I imagine it must look as old fashioned as a pipe would to me, back in the day
----------------------------------------------------------------------
this..

the generation involved have no interest in cigarettes, only vaping. 5/6 years ago was the last time a kid asked me to get them cigarettes outside the local shops, in the last 2 years or so the amount asking for vapes now is very common.

Imagine if the had ads with kids jumping around all happy and smiley with a hall & Oates soundtrack about to enjoy a cigarette which as we know is not conducive to a healthy lifestyle

Indeed, I see a number of youngsters not smoking, but drinking 50g+ cans of monster, and coke etc at 40g+ of sugar. Where’s the outrage on that??

Yeah it does seem like the younger generations are just not smoking anymore (ok a lot of them are just vaping) and maybe in a 100 years time smoking will be non existent in society without the need for this ban.

However it's still common to see some youth dressed all in black, wearing a black coat with his hood on in the middle of summer with a massive plume of vape rising above his head

With vaping replacing smoking, if the gov want to ban smoking, then they may aswell just ban nicotene from the vape liquids.

Keep vapes, just remove the nicotene from it and kids will get bored of them

You ban anything, doesn’t mean people will stop doing it, plus what CANT you order online these days?

Tough one of me.

Generally speaking I would want the anti-smoking argument to be won with people, rather than just banning them. And the argument is being won, the number of smokers continues to fall and in 2022 the % of young people smoking, which is traditionally high, was lower than all other ages bands other than the 65+. Probably because all the old smokers had died...

So this feels completely unnecessary and could almost be counter-productive if the younger generation start seeing it as an act of rebellion.

However, opposing the ban would put me on the same side of the argument as Liz Truss. Agreeing with that vacuous cretin just feels wrong.

Tough choice.

Isn't smoking a form of darwinism at work. If you are dumb enough to smoke and slowly commit suicide then so be it.
