Wolves v Bournemouth Match Thread

Nothing to do with a "flat" performance or team set up.

In case you haven’t noticed 4 forwards at the club have all been missing at the same time. Then we successfully play Ait Nouri forward and he got injured too. How many clubs in the world would carry on as if nothing had happened with such a decimated forward line I don’t know. Maybe one or two. Who knows, if we play with a full strength forward line in the coming weeks we might even win a game.

Very flat performance last night and I do think GON got it wrong on the team set up. With players returning from injury it was a chance to get back to the 343 set up with everyone back to their best positions. But he seemed determined to play all three of Lemina, Gomes and Doyle and juggled positions around to accommodate that. Lemina, Doyle, Toti, Ait Nouri all played in unfamiliar positions and it just didn’t work. And Bournemouth were playing through our midfield and forcing our wing backs on to the back foot never allowing them to venture forward.

Hopefully on Saturday Cunha will be back and we can revert to the tried and tested set up. Difficult choice then becomes which two from Lemina, Doyle, Gomes, Traore and Chirewa get to start in midfield. It could be any 2 from 5 as all are good enough but on current form the first name on the midfield team sheet would probably be Traore

Chirewa won't start in a midfield two. He is an attacking midfielder who is more likely to take the place of someone like Sarabia.

Tend to agree about Chirewa although he played central midfield when he came on last night and did well

Goal disallowed for this. Barely contact, no influence on the play, and no complaint from the Bournemouth player

Another below par performance from a side that is literally looking drained and devoid of energy. Time for GON to decide who should be playing in the middle of our midfield. No movement up front and yet another poor VAR decision.

Someone said recently that we didn't look like we're running out of steam. Well, the last few games have debunked that theory. This team looks shattered throughout the side and the seasons end can't come soon enough.

Having said that, we're in a better spot than most had expected and given the right funds and transfer dealings during the summer, we could well finish higher next term.

We have to try and sell some of those currently out on loan, but try and retain 1 or 2 and hope they can challenge for a spot in the senior squad.

This season there are only 4 teams who have a 25 man senior squad. Even Chelsea (18) and Man City (18) have one less than us. The difference is, they have a strong set of U21 players. We tend to send a lot of ours out on loan.

Fosun will have to step up to the plate in the summer if GON is going to improve this squad, but he can't do it with one hand tied behind his back.

Exit soap box.

Last 6 league games, 4 defeats and 2 draws. The same as Sheffield Utd and worse than everyone else.

Primarily I put that down to player availability, but the results will inevitably have had an effect on the motivation and performance of some of the players. Vicious circle.

Looking forward to next season now.

Great post wolfie

Spot on as usual, particularly the part regarding running out of steam

Perhaps we may have been premature with our praise of GON. Lately he has made some pretty horrible decisions placing players in rather bizarre positions to start games. Some of this is forced but can't help feeling he has over complicated it more often that not.

Gonna say it again, Hwang is crap

I think GON has had a pretty thankless task in recent weeks given the proportion of our squad that’s been unavailable in March and April. Think any club would have suffered with literally all senior forwards out injured at the same time, barring I guess Sarabia. Last week he only had 10 fit from the 19 man squad from which to choose a starting 11.

I’d still judge GON on what he achieved in the first 6 months of the season rather than the last 2 months

I agree entirely. Very limited footballer who at times looks like he couldnt trap a bag of cement!!

The all round game of Hwang is pretty terrible. But his goals have been a godsend this season and his header for the disallowed goal last night was excellent.

His value at the moment is higher than it’s ever been or in my opinion ever will be again. I’d certainly accept a half decent offer for him in the summer, as long as we bought in a couple of forwards to replace him and add to the squad.

posted 3 weeks ago

Completely agree. Right now a few may be fooled and pay perhaps 15 million for him. I would snap their hand off.

posted 3 weeks ago

Focus must be 100% on the forward line this summer. We cant go another transfer window without strengthening there -at least two additions required to at give us a chance of moving higher up the division next season.

A agree that GON should be judged on the first part of the season. Injuries have really messed things up for him these last few months.

posted 3 weeks ago

Yeah, cannot neglect that area again.

Plenty of reasons to be cheerful and optimistic right now, we have a good group of young players and so long as we don't lose too many then we should be on for a top ten finish next year with a couple of solid additions.

There’s a fair bit of transfer value in our squad now. Neto, Cunha, Gomes, Ait Nouri, Kilman - total value of over £150m there I would think. Personally I would like to keep all of them but although I don’t think we need to sell to stay within the sustainability limit, we might need to sell to buy.

I would like to see how much we could raise from the rest of the squad. Sa, Hwang, Podence, Guedes, Fabio could raise around £40m between them, especially now Sa is linked with a move to Saudi, which would go some way to strengthening the squad.

I've been voicing my opinion of Hwang for some time now. Shame a few others couldn't have piped up in support.

Agreed. While some others were proclaiming Hwang as the second coming of Buddha, you were clearly stated that your jury was still out. 👍

This from the WolvesBlog 😂

“ For the third season in a row we are failing miserably on the run in due to lack of numbers. Schoolboys on the bench from mid March onwards now seems to be part of Shi’s approach to staying the right side of FFP; meanwhile 3 of his “flagship signings” (sicknote Kalajdzic, wantaway Guedes and Glasgow’s joke of the month Fabio) all look to be on their way back to haunt us for another expensive season next time of subsidised loans out. Conversely the one who apparently wasn’t good enough and could have been bought for £20m (Vitinha) is now regularly star of the show at PSG.

It’s not so much that you aren’t spending the money Jeff, you’re just not very good at it.”

“Some of the best moments of my life, as sad as it may sound to some, have revolved around football. When my dad, god bless him, took me to Molineux for the first time when I was 8, I fell in love with the game, and Wolves in particular. When he passed on, I continued to go with my Grandad, before I got to the age where I went with my best mates. Going with my younger brother for the first time was another special moment. The floodlit games under the lights, the familiar walk under the subway and the smell of the stale cigs, the pre-game nerves at 10 to 3, watching the club you love, alongside family and great, lifelong mates, where for 90 minutes you’re transported to another world outside the boring, humdrum depression that is life. I’ve got great memories that will last me forever.

27 years later and this Saturday will be my last ever game. The absolute cancer that is VAR has finally killed the sport I love and I just can’t do it anymore. This is nothing to do with losing matches, I’ve seen enough crap performances over the years alongside the great and good. Goals being disallowed for stupid reasons, not being able to fully celebrate anymore because some clown in an office 50 miles away has seen an inch of a stud offside. It’s chipped and chipped away for the last few years, but last night was the final straw. This isn’t the game I grew up watching, and it breaks my heart.

I often think what it must be like for young kids trying to get into football now. If all this had been around when I was 8, I would never have got the bug, never in a million years. Depressing to think how many groups of mates will miss out on the experiences I had, following my club all over the country, from Luton to Leeds, from Nottingham to Norwich.

VAR has killed the game I love, and I’m finally done”

He’s in a part of the ground where they don’t really celebrate anyway. They just sit there and offer a polite round of applause and a hearty guffaw
