Diddy Kong Racing vs Mario Kart (N64)

Both great games.

But which one evokes more fond memories?

Go.

I never owned an N64 but my favourite karting memories were from Crash Team Racing and Muppet Racemania on the PS1.

MarioKart 64 was a truly fantastic game. Those were the days when gameplay was more important than graphics (even though the graphics were great).

Crash team racing was amazing - my brother has been on a nostalgia hype lately and downloaded all the old crash's and dug the PS1 out of the cellar, etc.

I loved Speedfreaks though!

I never really got into speed freaks. I just found the cars a little too wobbly - I always thought the handling on CTR was absolutely spot on.

@ myhammers, I could not agree more. The PS1, N64 and Sega Saturn had some of the best games with regards to gameplay ever made. I much prefer gameplay over graphics which is where the current gen has failed.

Never again will there be anything like Final Fantasy 7, 8 or 9, Metal Gear Solid 1, Syphon Filter, Rollcage, Spyro the Dragon, Tomb Raider 1, 2 and 3, Crash Bandicoot - the list goes on and on and I'd be here all day i didn't stop now.

Ahh, goods times.

Come on. It's always been graphics and gameplay together. Nobody went out of their way to make a crap looking game. It's just hat technology was available to them and the budget they were given.

I do agree that the companies at the time did try to make graphics as good as possible. However, with limited space on the disc, I feel there was far more emphasis put on the actual gameplay. Most of the games today do have perfectly crisp, almost 100% realistic graphics but the gameplay leaves a lot to be desired.

While that is true there were also games just as unplayable as there are now. Really all we're saying is there were good and bad programmers in the past just as there are now.

Oh yeah definitely there were good and bad. I think the thing is that before gaming became such a multi billion pound industry, there were far more smaller developers and producers with a lot more original ideas than today. Each one had their own little quirk and you could get a sense of the personality of the developers within the game. You knew if you bought a game developed by Codemasters or Square Soft, it would generally be a good game.

Now that money is so important now though, it's difficult to make a game that isn't a mass produced remake of and already established game (CoD, FIFA, WoW etc.) You can't blame Infinity Ward, EA or Blizzard though really, if people are prepared to pay money for the same thing over and over again, why bother developing new ideas if you can make shed loads from sequels.
