Tranquillo Barnetta - nothing to write home about
Riccardo Montolivo - again, nothing out of the ordinary
Ricardo Carvalho - not worth breaking TV and Kos up for
Goran Pandev - half decent
Royston Drenthe - handy speed demon
Walter Samuel - was good a long time ago
Christian Chivu - past his best
Raaaaaaauuuuuuuuuuuul - LONG past his best
Jefferson Farfan - reasonable but not amazing

So from that list there are potentially one or two for back-up purposes.

For a free transfer he is young, athletic, an exciting player that can take players on. To top it all off he counts as home grown.

Not sure we need him but if we sold a winger I would quite happily have Holliet as a back up winger for us..
