Just the other day, news broke that Stiliyan Petrov was diagnosed with 'Acute Leukaemia'. As an individual of some medical knowledge, I know what this means, as well as the severity and prognosis of the condition ā as Iām sure many other do. It goes without saying that I wish Mr. Petrov the utmost best in his recovery and condolences to himself and family of the bad news.
This coupled with the tragic incidents at White Hart Lane a few weeks ago upon which Fabrice Muamba collapsed to cardiac related issues, shows that the men that cross that line onto the pitch, adored by billions, idolised by young children ā are only human. But the aftermath of that incident, as well as that of Stiliyan Petrov, was nothing short of astounding.
As much as people, or those that say football is a game played by brutes and supported by animals, the sense of humanity and support for the affected individuals has been amazing. BBC was inundated with get-well messages from everyone who had any knowledge of the incident. Twitter and Facebook were flooded with the best wishes by the public. Football took the front and back pages of national newspapers. All for the right reasons.
On Friday, BBC Football uploaded a picture of Fabrice Muamba smiling from his hospital bed at The London Chest Hospital. Muamba was supposedly 'dead' for nearly two hours, and thus the care that the paramedics, the club doctor and Dr. Deaner's team (of which the latter lectured us recently) can only be commended. The latest news is that Muamba is on the road to recovery - absolutely fantastic news.
But the public show of support by Muamba and Petrov's fellow professionals, and fans shows that football is more than just 11 men kicking a ball around.
At its most powerful, it can unite millions of people together. A concept that very few things on this planet can do. That is why football is The Beautiful Game.
