Huddersfield Town v Sheffield Wednesday

Huddersfield Town v Sheffield Wednesday
Sat 7 12:30 Galpharm Stadium

'…on the weekend we have a chance to affect one of the teams around us. It has got the ingredients to be a great game and one that we are looking forward to.' Simon Grayson

The Manager

Will Dave Jones be the man to take Wednesday to the Championship?
Admittedly his managerial career is not exactly glittered in glory, he was division two runner up with Stockport County in the 96-97 season. He had success at Wolverhampton Wanderers in the 02-03 play off final and he took Cardiff City to the FA Cup final in the 07-08 season. Will he have the tactical know how to unlock Huddersfield Town under Simon Grayson's watch?

The Opposition

Full name: Sheffield Wednesday Football Club
Nickname(s): The Owls, The Wednesday
Founded: 4 September 1867
Ground: Hillsborough Stadium (Capacity: 39,812)
Chairman: Milan Mandarić
Manager: Dave Jones
League: One
Current position: 3rd

Sheffield Wednesday is one of the oldest professional clubs in the world and the fifth oldest in the English league.

Town collected their highest transfer fee from Sheffield Wednesday, a tidy sum of £2,700,000 for Andy Booth in 1996, was paid.

Did you know? Sheffield Wednesday started as a cricket club when it formed in 1820, as The Wednesday Cricket Club, after the day of the week on which they played their matches. A meeting on the evening of Wednesday 4 September 1867 at the Adelphi Hotel established a footballing side to keep the team together and fit during the winter months.

Sheffield Wednesday are the only English League club with a day of the week in their name.

At the start of the 20th century, a player presented them with an owl mascot to honour their stadium at Owlerton, adjacent to Hillsborough, the club became known as 'The Owls'.

Our guests have some famous supporters too, to name a few, Michael Vaughan, Michael Palin and Jarvis Cocker follow 'The Owls' too.

Since Being elected to the football League in 1892, Wednesday have spent the majority of their history in the top level of English football (Div 1/Prem 66 seasons). 35 seasons have been spent in the second level (Div 2/Championship) and only 9 seasons have been spent in the third level (Div 3/League 1). Wednesday have never played below level three since becoming a football League club.

Last Meeting Of The Teams

Town's last league meeting with Sheffield Wednesday saw the points being shared, however, it was no bore draw! Jordan Rhodes bagged himself two goals before Wednesday could reply. They did, with two goals in two minutes, 26th and 28th minutes and added two more in the 63rd and 74th. Town were shell shocked, but they did not roll over and pulled a goal back in the 77th minute with 'boy wonder', Jordan Rhodes making it a hat trick. He wasn't finished there and made it four in the 90th minute to level the match. Several premiership clubs have shown a lot of interest in Jordan, will he stay? He may, if Town get promoted, then again, the premiership is calling!

Travelling

For those travelling 'darn sarf' and wishing to 'whet their whistles', The Rose and Crown, Wadsley Jack and The Horse and Jockey are deemed away fans friendly pubs.
I'm not adding where the ground is and how to get there, because if you don't know then it's a bit of a worry!

Final Comment

Wednesday is obviously a significant day of the week for our guests, let's be grateful Town are playing them on a Saturday, cheering them on for another win!

JK, it already ended, but we haven't reached that part of our past yet.

I have to agree tho' JK, about signing the 3 big/key players...I was disappointed we never went for that, instead going for 'potental' that we can sell on at a profit. DH obviously wants a return on his investment, but doing it this way and expecting to get promoted as well hasn't worked.

Buying 'potential' is risky, 'cos you never know how they'll turn out...and sadly all the summer signings LC made ended up pretty duff, and even more sadly, the 'experienced heads' he brought in...Miller, Naysmith, Johnson have all got themselves injured...

It's like a repeat of history, all Town needed in 1972 to survive was to bring in a couple of experienced lads, but we didn't...and we haven't now.

The team will be dismantled in the summer anyway, and the LC era brought to an end with a bump. DH will have to revisit his own ideology too, whatever league we are in, because aiming to scrape through with the minimum of effort/spend also hasn't worked.

Boots...

To put it in simple terms, what I am saying is, without the basics, you’re wasting your time. To quote Julie Andrews, “When you read you begin with ABC, when you sing you begin with Do Re Mi.”

I once went to watch the third day of a golf tournament in which Bernhard Langer was playing. He came off the course after finishing a round, which put him near the top of the leader board, and went straight on to the practice ground. His caddy brought him a bucket of balls, and he hit shot after shot after shot, with the short irons. His wife was waiting in the sponsored car, reading a magazine. I reckon that attitude might help a person to become a two-time Masters’ champion and the first official number one ranked player in 1986.

The story that a young Donald Bradman spent hours on his own, hitting a golf ball with a cricket stump, is part of Australian folklore. His Test average was 99.4, and his First Class average 90.27!

All sports can involve that variable that some people call “luck”, but as golfer Gary Player once said, “The more I practice, the luckier I get.”

Where will it all end?

It has been estimated that the Sun has been active for 4.6 billion years and has enough fuel to go on for another five billion years or so. At the end of its life, the Sun will start to fuse helium into heavier elements and begin to swell up, ultimately growing so large that it will swallow the Earth.

So there you go! The big question is… when that happens, will Town still be in League 1?

So as Mrs Murdstone once ak'sed "What Shall we do with him MrDick"

WELL Other than making the observation that it always seems to be seeming superstars who offer these 'asides' to their trt questionable successes ~ (for what constitutes success in one persons eyes might well amount to little more than a fetish gone mad in anothers) ~ and Dye Know (as Dean Windass would say) one has to wonder if Bernard Don ~ and Gary were simply BORN to be Wild ..

As for Me & Thee Captain .. How I'd luv to meet ~ But not arranged ~ Purely by chance ~ in fact one might assert thats How we Began .. ?
Well for an encore some artistes tell a joke .. some sing a song .. But dye know I think I'll just offer you ~ a wink of a knowing eye

Maybe you already know each other? Maybe you are sitting at opposite ends of the same office oblivious to your workmate's on-line persona?

When I were a sprog, knee high to a mini skirt (wink wink), and keen as mustard on footy..I used to do keep ups wi' a tennis ball, one foot at a time, until I could do over 100 ..Then when I played for Milnsbridge County Junior School footy team, I couldn't kick fook all 'cos it was too heavy..

Moral of the story. ?

Don't play with your balls next to a girl in a mini skirt, you end up being a bit of a wha - anker.
