Graham Thorpe you horrible man

In 1999 England were playing New Zealand, Alex Tudor was on 99 not out and Thorpe hit a 4 to win the game, what a denying Tudor his chance of a century.

Wrong 8bit, I seem to remember Tudor hit the winning runs in that match. He was on 95 and top edged the ball for 4 to make 99.

I think Thorpey was quite inconsiderate though, Tudor was smacking fours all over the place and on 95, they needed 3 to win, he could've let Tudor make the rest of the runs himself, but he hit 2 runs, leaving England needing 1 to win and Tudor on 95. He hit a four again, match won, but Tudor on 99*, he should've gone for a six maybe, but maybe he thought he'd get plenty of chances to make that century in the future (which of course he didn't).

Yeah you're right JustTrue, just looked into it. I assumed Thorpe hit the winning runs because I remember being a bit angry at him, possibly he hit a boundary or two just before that instead.

Actually no you're version is spot on, it's all come back to me!

Yes 8Bit, I was angry at Thorpey too when I watched it, not normally I care about personal records, but it was so unlikely that Tudor would get that chance again, he was in a zone and England turned the match around brilliantly and it would've finished the match off in style. Unfortunately, we didn't win another test that summer

Was that the game that Tudor had come in a night watchman?

Yep, Tudor made 30 in the first innings and impressed Nasser enough to make him NWM for the 2nd innings and the rest is history.

I'm not sure where to look for some information but it would make good reading on how many captains have declared whilst a batsman has been in his 90's...I have witnessed it a couple of times at least...

Cheers Just True, I thought it was but couldn't be sure. Was a great test match as you say though it was another disappointing summer for England cricket fans as we never won another test.

Good job the bad old days are behind us!

My highest ever score was 94 not out, and may batting partner hit the winning four of the last ball of the penultimate over.

Still got hammered after the game though.

i remember that. tudor was another of our unfillfilled talents who could have been given more of a chance by the selectors.

on the other hand, thorpe was the best england batsman of the last 20 years so he get's let off
