Herbert Chapman, the then manager of Arsenal, flew in a private jet to attend the funeral of John Thompson. He had submitted an offer for John, who turned him down flat.
Chapman wondered what it was about Celtic that their stars would not be drawn for any sum of money. He put a blank cheque on the table and asked Jimmy McGrory to put the sum of money on it that would persuade him to sign for AFC, Jimmy turned to Maley and said that he wanted to go home to Celtic. This was the second time that Chapman had tried to sign McGrory only to be rejected again.
He had such respect of the loyalty of the players that he flew up to JT funeral to attend.
