City's Current Squad vs The Invincibles

I wanted to post this on both City and Arsenal boards but for some reason, I could not. Could this also go on the City board as I want their opinion on this?

I know that this is an old article, and it is written by talksport/shi.te, but are they correct? I personally feel that it is actually not too bad. However, I do feel that some of their comparisons are slightly innacurate. For example, David Silva is a fantastic player, but for me he is not quite at the level that Ljungberg was at when he was at his peak. The Aguero and Bergkamp comparison is an extremely difficult one, but I would go for Bergkamp because as good as Aguero is, Bergkamp was just majestic.

Overall, I have looked and City have an extremely talented squad of individuals. If they were able to function as a team, then they would be of great opposition to the Invincibles. Let's not forget that the Invincibles had more then their fair share of luck in that season.

A combination of some of City's current team and the Invincibles would be formidable and would be able to rival the current all-conquering Barcelona. team in my opinion.

For me, the team would be:

- Lehmann (Their reasoning for choosing Hart ahead of him is rendered irrelevant because they seem to be forgetting that Lehmann holds the record for the most consecutive clean sheets in the Champions League).
- Richards (Quite difficult, but Lauren was prone to moments of absolute madness)
- Campbell (Campbell at his peak, was one of the finest defenders in the world)
- Kompany (Kompany is one of the best defenders in the world at this moment in time)
- A. Cole (Cole is an absolute idiot however, you cannot deny that at his peak he was the best left-back in Europe)
- Ljungberg (For the sheer amount that he added to the team, bags of goals and bags of assists, a more effective player than Silva)
- Vieira (Does anything even need to be said?)
- Yaya Toure (Gilberto Silva was an excellent player, but Toure, Toure is an absolute beast. Imagine him partnered with Vieira at his peak. Wow!)
- Pires (Excellent player. Offered a vast amount more goals and assists than Milner)
- Henry (At his peak, in my opinion he was the most devasting striker in world football. He had everything, the pace, the power, the skill, the composure. THE complete striker)
- Bergkamp (This was so hard, they're completely different players. Bergkamp would just stroll through games with that great impudence that he posessed. Aguero though, is a workhorse, he works very hard for his team and he has one thing that Bergkamp did not have.... Pace. However, Henry had that in bundles so I will just go for Bergkamp)

Are we discussing league only here? because if not, united 99 wins handsdown.

We're discussing the better team - not who won the most trophies. I don't rate our double winning side of '98 or '02 ahead of our unbeaten side who won less trophies. In a fantasy match between the United side of '99 and the other sides I listed, I'd tip you to lose - incuding to your 07/08 team.

The Interesting thing is that on their method of comparing one player against another you could end up with a whole variety of scores

---------

Should be like this though:

Campbell > Kompany > Toure > Lescott

That's how you should set up your inequality. That way you end up with the best 11 players... Your considerations are independent and they shouldn't be.

Your 99 team were great but if we judged the teams solely on trophies won, would Houllier's Liverpool team in 2001 deserve a mention also?

mthierry, you say the better team, i'm sure that will come down to personal opinion, no doubt most arsenal fans will point to going a whole (league) season unbeated but united fans will say to compete on three fronts and be successful in all of them takes more.

The Invincibles were a family this City team is full of spotlight grabbing selfish mugs! Do NOT disrespect our unbeaten side like this

They've got a very good team of individuals though.

99 United team won all the big trophys that season. No other English club has ever done that before. But then again i think the 08 United team is the best player for player anyway.
