i love this formation. its so exiting to watch because its so attacking. wigan appear to be having some success with it. napoli have used it to some success particularly in cup competitions. opposition players and managers don't seem to know how to deal with it. i think for the big games, this formation should be used because it suits our counter attacking style. at home then you can play 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 because you need bodies forward constantly. having 3 defenders who all sit deep is a waste at home.
its worked for us well in the past as well. the players we have suits it perfectly:
..................Reina
......Carragher..Skrtel..Agger
Johnson..Spearing..Lucas..Enrique
................Gerrard
..........Suarez....Carroll
i wouldn't advocate using it every game because like i say, sometimes you can't afford to have 3 players just stood on the half way line doing nothing when you're trying to break a team down. also teams will begin to suss you out and its impact won't be quite so great. one other thing you could play bellamy up front with suarez instead of carroll if you want to play on the VERY quick counter attack.
what do you think?
3 at the back

If we're meant to be playing counter-attacking football, why isn't Bellamy starting in any of those teams?
Surely his pace is the best counter-attacking threat we have...

people will just call it 5 at the back because they want something to moan about

I'll agree if you can find me any team ever that has won a trophy using 3 at the back.
Maybe Ajax in the early 90's. Cannot think of another.

I suggested that formation after the QPR game and got crucified for it. Especially by TOOR.....oh the shock!
We have the players for it and if you going to use that formation then the midfield doesnt need any width, so Downing will have to be omitted.

Not to forget that Juve have been using it frequently this season as well.

Barca have used it a lot as well.
And anyway, their 433 is only like that when defending.
When in position it shifts to more or less a 343...
