we cannot afford to

MODS forgot to tag arsenal to the discussion can you help me out?

be like liverpool
(liverpool fans I come in peace, but I will say negative although fair comments. well I think they are fair anyway...)

In all fairness, well done to them for winning the carling cup, even though it's the most minor cup if it was easy to win, we would have one by now. If they even go onto win the FA cup more congratulations, they've done well to get to the final

The reason why arsenal can not afford to be a team like liverpool however is the difference is that if we had been out of the champions league for so long, we would never be able to get players like suarez or torres because we don't have as impressive a history that Liverpool has, nor fanbase.

Unlike Liverpool we are a london club were there are so many other teams which means all of the local talent and fans are quite evenly spread whereas in liverpool you're either a red or a blue.

If arsenal were to drop out of the top 4, and not get back in the season after we'd lose our best players and we would not be able to get players anywhere near the caliber of fabregas or robin van persie again most likely.

If we were looking like we could end up on the bottom half of the table despite being on the verge of possibly winning two cup competitions do you think the likes of podolski would want to come here? We wouldn't even have to think about rvp signing another contract. Bigger clubs would swoop players like song, kosh and verm away from us in a heartbeat.

Liverpool have managed to hold onto players for longer than they should have like maybe torres for longer than they should have because of this, gerrard especially. Even if we had a local being our captain do you think he'd stay forever at a club that had no CL cup whatsover, and wasn't playing in europe?

Even though it would be nice to win a trophy or two, if we are going to get any better, or at least stay at a stable level where it's likely that our players will get poached from left right and centre, top 4 is more important than domestic trophies.

If you don't believe me, think about spurs, maybe even newcastle. If they don't make top4 they probably risk a few key players leaving very immediately. At least with us the only real uncertainty we have with who's staying or leaving is rvp. I say that like he's not our best player, but at least we have no immediate concerns over players like song, verm, kosh and wilshere, that'd be a nightmare!

This debate is simple

Why would a fan want to be in any competition?

To win it

Arsenal fans however, have now convinced themselves otherwise

yes winning helps but it's not the be all and end all to a club, if it was arsenal wouldn't be considered a big team at all, because we've never won the CL

even though we haven't won anything in a while very few teams face us predicting an easy victory whether home or away, which a lot of teams that haven't won anything recently can't really say for themselves

The thing that gets me is despite 16 attempts at the cl arsenal have come close to winning it once!

I'm not saying I don't want arsenal to win domestic cups. however I do not envy liverpools position at all because we can not afford such a poor league performance, especially for the amount of years running now that you've failed to play any CL football

I would be absolutely devastated to think that my team played in CL year after year, season after season and never win it.

Believe me, Arsenal fans are desperate for silverware - hence these articles that have conveniently popped up all over the site talking about the importannce of CL football.

You keep telling yourselves that

well we are looking at a long term perspective, a team that can't perform in the league has no chance of consistently winning trophies

you spent 100million, had no european football to worry about yet you're looking at finishing mid table. if you win the FA cup fair does but till then you guys have a lot of work to do and a lot to prove next season

Let's settle this. We want silverware for our club. We crave it desperately. But we just realise that for a self-sustaining club like ourselves, it's necessary to stay in the CL and keep building the platform that will establish us as a top club for a long time to come, hence increasing our likelihood of winning trophies in the future.

Most clubs that move stadiums suffer horrendous transitions. Ours has been exceptional with the lack of silverware the only blemish on the record. Do you think any sane Arsenal fan would want to thow that away for the fleeting enjoyment of a domestic cup? Come off it.

Its funny when you talk about building because Arsenal are a club that loses its best players.

That CL isn't helping the cause is it

xabi to madrid
torres to injuries
gerrard to age

Better than no CL, selling your best players and then replacing them with Carroll, Adam and Henderson.

And then expecting to be taken seriously, you know, by anyone.
