QPR poach Man City technical director

What is a technical director ?

posted on 24/4/12

The role of a technical director can vary from them supporting the manager with recruitment to overseeing the whole football club from the first team to the medical depatment. The role is very common in European clubs.

Basically he will deal with the 'technical' or footballing side of things within the club, as opposed to financial or marketing ect.

someone that gets paid for doing eff all and are usually the first out the door if a club starts doing badly

Yeah I don't see the point in this position, unless of course you have an owner like Chelsea whon wants to pick the team so a middle man between the manager and the owner is vital

As I said much more common in Europe, where I think they are more influencial in transfers and such.

Look at the Liverpool situation. They have had a dreadful run of league results and only the performances in the cup is preventing this season from being branded a disaster yet who was it that got the chop when the owners came in? Comolli. Did he do anything wrong? Yes he overspent but every single transfer he made was under Dalglishs orders. Seems a bit harsh to me

The correct wording for the position of Technical Director is ......... Fall Guy .............. as per comments made above about Comolli. Dammed if you do, dammed if you don't.

You may have poached him, but he's stepping into a frying pan...!

You didn't exactly poach him, he was sacked.

And your point is?

I don't understand the opposition to the role.

These are giant multinational businesses. A manager can't come close to doing all the necessary things required. And even if they came close they would be spread so thinly they couldn't focus on the managing the 1st team bit.
