After the new man came to the helm in the late 90s, bringing with him lots of fresh ideas, we enjoyed what could be considered as our glory days that lasted well into the 00s. Batting well above our average considering our size, we became a player in Europe, holding our own against powerhouses from Germany and France.
Then, the man at the top saw the end was coming and jumped ship before his reputation was sullied. We got a new man in who proved to be nowhere near as popular as his predecessor; he was more old school and proved to be unpopular from the outset.
After a couple of years we got the change a lot of us craved, this man was finally relieved of his post and sent into obscurity, and a new, younger man was put in charge, a new broom to sweep away the problems of the previous administration.
It started off well, but now, a couple of years on, we find ourselves no better off than under the last chap. No forward movement, in fact, it could be argued we’ve gone backwards. As has been revealed this week we haven’t dipped like this since the 70s.
Anyway, that’s enough about politics and Blair, Brown and Cameron.
After Ngog’s winning goal on Tuesday, which will hopefully provide the catalyst for us to push on and stay up, I was wondering what people thought was the most important goal that we’d scored in their time watching Bolton.
For me, it’s Julian Darby’s against Stoke at home in the 92/93 season when we got our first promotion under Rioch. It was the fourth in the run of five games we had to win to go up automatically. Stoke had already guaranteed their promotion and were the best team in the division by a mile. From what I remember, it was a pretty tense game, and when Darby scored in front of the away end even some Stoke fans cheered because it was between us and Port Vale to go up with them.
It’s the most important goal for me because I was certain, if we didn’t go up automatically, we’d end up losing to West Brom at some point in the play offs having lost to them home and away already that season.
Most important

John McGinlay's Penalty vs Preston in said 92/93 season. If Darby's goal vs Stoke was important then this one was vital to our promotion.

This is not goal scored (sorry OP), but more defining moment.

2 nil down, just before half time, staring down the barrel of a Wembley thumping, and the rest they say is history!

Zat. I was suck between Darby's, McGinlay's against Preston or the winners against Hull and Bournemouth. I only went for the one I did because of the 5 games I remember thinking that Stoke was going to be the hardest to win.

JAH. Surely that comes second to Stubbs' save against Hull!? I mean, he wasn't even a full time keeper but the way he flung himself across the goal you never would've known he wasn't.
Apart from him wearing a white shirt and being sent off obviously!

Clegg, I too remember that Clarke save - what a keeper he was at the time by the way. I just remember the Preston player bearing down on goal and Clarke at full stretch to his right to palm it away.
In other goalkeeping news Kevin Poole is hanging up his gloves after a 32 year playing career.
Blimey, he must have been about 40 when he played for us! Still a top pro, even though I'll never forgive him for having a wander out to the half way line at Goodison
