Liverpool got the FA Cup final defeat out of their system by crushing Chelsea at Anfield on Tuesday night.

Three goals in the first half sent the Reds on their way to a comfortable victory. Michael Essien gave Liverpool the lead on 19 minutes after Luis Suarez had made a dazzling run in behind the Chelsea defence before hitting it off the midfielder into the net.

Six minutes later, Jordan Henderson doubled the lead. John Terry, having already been nutmegged three times by Suarez and Andy Carroll, slipped at a vital moment as Maxi Rodriguez played it through. Henderson took it forward and coolly slotted it past Ross Turnbull.

And three minutes later it was 3-0 as Carroll nodded on a Jonjo Shelvey corner kick for Daniel Agger to head in. It could and perhaps should have been four before the break as Liverpool were awarded a penalty for a foul on Carroll by Branislav Ivanovic. But Stewart Downing stepped up and slammed it against the post with Turnbull having dived the wrong way.

Five minutes into the second half, Chelsea had a lifeline as Ramires bundled the ball in with his body following a Florent Malouda free kick. But the game was killed off 11 minutes later when Turnbull's poor kick found Shelvey, who controlled it and lashed it into the top corner from 30 yards.

The result moves Liverpool back up to eighth place, a point behind Everton. It also means Chelsea can now not qualify for the Champions League through league positions, and must win the competition this season or face a season in the Europa League.
