Why did Federer enter Rome?

Well, it's clear. He wants that 1st spot back. He saw the draw and thought he had a good chance to grab 360 points reaching the semi without having to suffer and aggravate his injury too much.

Which means, should Fed reach the semi of course, Nadal woudl have to win Rome to be seeded 2 for the FO. And whatever Federer and Nadal might say, Having to face both Rafa/Federer AND Djoko at the French is of course a very important matter and worth a small effort if it can be avoided.

And without playing Rome, Nadal reaching the final, woudl have been enough to overtake Federer. So added pressure on Nadal.

Having watched a bit of teh Federer match today, clearly Federer is not very mobile and was certainly trying to play carefully within himself.

So I keep being told...I only ever played put put golf and had quite a deft touch.
Maybe one day.
I'm too buzzy on the inside for golf plus I love the thrill of chasing the ball.
There is nothing quite like tipping it over the net.

I think this sums up best my views on this topic too.

Whatever his goals are, there is no scenario under which risking an injury here would improve his chances of attaining those goals. So he must be 100% certain that there is no risk of aggravating whatever the problem may be (if there indeed is much of a problem to start with).

As if it was that easy. The fact is that he hesitated playing. If he had been 100% fit he would not have hesitated. It's obvious that having more practice on clay and the chance to solidify his ranking and have an easier draw at RG and Wimbledon was certainly worth playing Rome.

He played that Madrid final already needing treatment so he did compromise his injury by going all teh way and winning Madrid. He may have played on teh back foot and let Berdych win. But no he chose to give it 100% for another TMS and points.....and glory.

So as I said teh decision to take playing Rome or not was not a light one and that is probably due to a physical impediment.

So looks like Federer will have to beat Seppi tonight to stand a chance of preserving his #2 spot for the FO.

Djoko is his sole saviour.

Ferrer could beat Nadal...?
