ANY GOOD

Hi guys, Celtic fan seeking info on Mills, is he any good?
We need a big, strong and quick CB and I wonder if he fits the bill.

Wilson has been a total disappointment even when fit. He is slow on the turn and appears to have no strength. He also passes back without looking for the opposition, wouldn't take him if I were you but I hope some club does.
Thanks for the info and good luck for next season.

Honestly, we're probably the wrong fans to be asking.

We haven't seen the best of Matt Mills (at least I hope not, we certainly haven't seen anything worth the amount we paid for him), but similarly there have been things wrong at the club beyond that one player.

He was brought in by Sven, looked average, then Pearson came in and they fell out with each other. The details of this haven't been made public, but most inside info/tales on the grapevine/speculation tell of Mills having something of a foul-mouthed rant at Pearson and Pearson putting him in his place. No doubt you'll hear verious opinions of who's in the wrong depending on whether people like Pearson or not - my opinion is that if I did that to my boss whether I liked him or not, I'd get severely disciplined for it. Along with some rather arrogant interviews where he's spoken along the lines of thinking he's better than he is, my opinion of Mills as a guy is not very high.

As a player, his style is no-nonsense; he'll put himself in the way but don't expect someone who looks at all comfortable on the ball - he's more likely to hit long balls to the wings and when you see him try to pass you'll understand why. However, as I say, his reputation when he came was a lot better than we have seen from him, so he's probably been underperforming here as compared to the rest of his career. That said, the Reading fans weren't exactly sad to see him go when we bought him, and they had tales to tell of how his relationship with the fans there was shaky at best.

He may need a new challenge, he may flourish in the SPL, who knows. I wouldn't be too concerned if I were you as he may be worth a punt, particularly given the situation that we'll be looking to offload to save on his (massive) wages. Hopefully for him, he'll have learned from this year and this experience and be more... let's say "tactful" in the future.

You'll probably get varied opinions on Mills, some perhaps influenced by the fact he has fallen out with our manager.

IMHO, Mills has the attributes to be a top Premiership defender, he is in the mould of John Terry for me. As it stands, I personally think if we were to be promoted he would be the defender who could fit in quickest in the Premiership, he isn't particularly quick though, but by no means a carthorse.

Unfortunately his confidence was knocked early doors this season and that combined with the fact our two CBs have been switched around constantly has meant we haven't seen the best of him on a regular basis.

Some may point at his disciplinary record, but he didn't particularly get a huge amount of yellow cards and one of his two reds was unlucky. Generally, I don't think he is a rash player and there is no getting away from the fact he was statistically in our best pairing at the back last season.

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a way forward for him at Leicester. I think he could comfortably move up to a Premiership squad outside of the top 6 or so teams, but this isn't going to happen because of a reputation he will have built up over the last year.

Do I think he could fit in quickly and do a good job at Celtic? Undoubtably. We are going to have to sell him cheaply because of wages and Pearson wanting rid - if he did sign for you guys, I would imagine in a year's time you will be feeling he is worth £1m,£2m or possibly £3m more than what you paid.

You will get two sets of extreme opinions morbhoy.

Personally, I think Mills is potentially the best CB at Leicester. He reads the game well and often looks to have more time on the ball than others around him.

Criticisms. He lunges into some tackles where the smart move would be to stay on his feet. He believes that he can ping long passes to the front men (I can only recall one great ball all season) and he clearly believes he has a right to be in the team.

There is an awful lot of mystery surrounding his demise at Leicester but the consensus accept that it was two argumentative gits going up against each other and Pearson won !

In my opinion he is worth a good £3m and you could be getting a great signing if Lennie can manage his attitude. But as I said, I suspect I will be in the minority as most will take the view that anyone who leaves is pants !

Thanks very much guys, you're right, there are opposing views and opinions of him.
We don't need someone who lunges into tackles, the refs up here will have him off in no time if he does that and, as for pinging long balls, sounds like Gary Caldwell when he was here !!
I hope you don't take Wilson for your sake unless he has a transformation and thanks again.

My feeling on Mills is that he is on a par with our other defenders. In that none are complete players and each have their own strengths and weaknesses.

Mills is committed and puts in body on the line. Tackles well most of the time, good in the air and reads the game reasonably well and prepared to dive in front of the ball if he gets it wrong.
He’s also prone to a lack of confidence (see Reading at home), which leads to poor decision making, not particularly quick and his distribution is poor.

Part of me thinks he’s average, but he also reminds me of a young Steve Walsh. Walshie started off pretty ordinary and some would go further and say he was poor, but he made the most of his limited ability to become a very consistent, Premier League centre back. I’ve an incline (and it’s just an incline) that Mills has potential, but we’ve not really seen enough of it at Leicester.

I agree with KTF1. Mills looks to have te attributes to be a premiership quality defender.

Bit there's no denying he's been out of form this year an there are question marks over his attitude.

Get him playing well and he could be the bargain of the century. He could also be a time bomb waiting to had a massive bust up with Lennon!!
