If I was Roy facing an unusually hostile opposition to my appointment, I'd pick a safe core squad, that had experience playing for England, with a few youthful additions I was confident would be first team players in the future.
Phil Jones for example, is a somewhat controversial appointment, however his potential is obvious to all, and I think he is a certainty for the World Cup in 2 years time.
Whereas Richards is competing with Walker, and only the next 2 seasons will prove who is the dominant rightback.
It is my view that if he would've picked an unusually young squad and they crashed out in the group stage; the press would've hounded him out of the job for unforgivable naivety.
However if he picks, what is widely perceived as 'England's best players', the story in the press is 'England's stars fail to shine'.
Roy has only got days to prepare his squad, hence I'm confident he'll take a more radical approach to the next tournament. But for now you can't blame him for playing it safe x
