Hi Stokeyscouse here,
not been on this forum as a poster, only the old one. A question to fellow fans, am I the only one who doesn't want Rafa back as boss?
He won lots for us before, we were feared in Europe for his tactical nous and knowledge, he signed some great players, stuck up for the city and the club... I know this!
My problem with re-appointing Rafa is that it's a similar appointment to KK, i.e. trying to recreate history with an icon. It didn't work with KK despite the clamour when he was first appointed. There was a big request for Kenny and like it or not it hampered the subsequent hiring (and firing) of Roy Hodgson. We all know how Roy was here. My problem is that I think a lot of us are looking at Rafa with rose tinted sunglasses. I will be the first to admit that I wasn't happy when Rafa was sacked and thought him like Kenny should be afforded more time. However, after he left I looked at him in an objective way as possible... think about it. We won Champs league, regular challengers of top 4, FA cup etc. However, Rafa made a lot of questionable transfer dealings, selling Xabi, buying Robbie Keane and Aquilani. Also his man-management was also questionable; remmember Stevie G getting upset when Rafa took off Torres during the match against Birmingham i think.
All i'm saying is that yes i want Liverpool back in the big time, but it seems we're in a no win situation due to fans clamour of Rafa. If we sign him people will think instant success, which will NOT be the case (regardless of who's bought in). If we don't sign, people will be very inpatient with the new man that comes in and not give him the time to implement changes before we hear a "Rafa in!" demand.
I personally think the best man for the job would be Klopp, who i believe has said he doesn't want it. Next, controversial one this is but maybe bringing in AVB would be a good idea. He's young, determined and has something to prove against his previous employers.
Please keep it constructive guys!!
Am i the only one?

What a fine article!!
A lot of fans are obsessed with Rafa for the CL and his early successes, but fail to see how unstable he was towards the end of his reign here and then at Inter... Constantly doing his internal affairs external and in a cringe worthy unprofessional manner...
He could come back and be great, but it could hugely backfire and we are back to stage one again....
Fresh approach for me every day!

You say fresh I say unknown quantity. Always an element of risk but
for a manager winning two la ligas, UEFA cup European cup Italian super cup European super cup world club cup and the FA cup, as well as another European cup final, a European cup semi final and Europa semi final...
There's much less risk than of a fresh/unknown manager. Especially as he's already settled in the area

Re-appointments are very common in the rest of Europe where managers go on to have as much or more success, some managing the same club for a 3rd stint! It didn't work for Dalglish second time around but that doesn't mean it will never work.

Trappatoni did nothing with Bayern first time round but won the double first season back and a cup the next season.

Every team appointing a new manager is taking a risk on him. Rafa would be risky, Martinez would be risky. If Rafa got the job and it isn't going so well there'd be the 'I told you so' from those who didn't want him. if Martinez gets the job and it isn't going so well there'll be 'I told you so' from those who think he isn't good enough to start with. Other than Mourinho or Guardiola, who will never come, but would cause shock if they failed, any other new manager will get the same response.
