The Modric Myth

A lot of people on here are critical of Modric, saying he goes missing in the big games and was anonymous in the second half of the season.

Firstly, the reason he wasn't as awesome as he was in the first half of the season was because Aaron Lennon was injured and stupidly, Harry played Modric as on the left wing for much of January - April. Imagine playing Carrick there and being surprised when he isn't performing as good as he was in the centre.
As for 'going missing' in the big games, to my reckoning no football player has ever played well in EVERY crunch game. Modric has played well against Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Inter Milan over the past 2 seasons and if put into a team who don't just rely on Bale being fit just for him to be played in the middle I think he'll be a roaring success.

As for him not being worth the fee quoted, he has one thing that Sahin, Sweinsteiger, Strootman etc have and that is a guarantee that he'll be great in the Premier League because he's been consistently great over the past 4 seasons and if that costs £30-40 million than we should pay it. We are partly to blame for such high costs after selling Ronaldo for £80 million and if we want to compete with City and Chelsea we have to pay these high fees or else we'll be forever playing catch up.

I have said in the past that we don't need new central midfielders because i'm sure the ones we have (if they stay fit) can do the job but even with that, if we had a chance to get Modric of course i'd be happy because in Tottenham's team he's an 8/10 player but surrounded by players like Rooney, Carrick, Nani and Vidic he'd be a 9/10 player and we'd have an even stronger squad which is something Sir Alex must be thinking too.

I think the ideal player for us would be the kind of player Scholes was when he returned from his eye condition in the 2006-7 season: someone who recycles the ball efficiently and cleverly under pressure, who can (unlike Scholes now his legs are fading) press aggressively over 90 minutes, who makes sure we are moving the ball around crisply and who instigates attacking moves whenever the progressive pass is on. I think Modric is the best current Premiership player of that type, even though he isn't going to be as good as Scholes. He's good enough to replace today's Scholes. However, it seems he is too crucial to Spurs to be made available to us at the kind of realistic market rate we would be liable to pay.

He's gone into more detail about him in the past but I agree with everything he's said today.

My position is clear as per Modric. He would cost too much money and isn't consistent enough for us to fork out the money required.

He is a decent player but those funds will be better used elsewhere

Because assist stats don't prove anything.

That's Ballacks, they mean a lot more in the grand scheme of things than the ridiculous chance stats you posted

stats, in any form of life that are used as the basis of an argument are a joke. (Lies, damned lies and stats and all that).

You certainly cant explain football with stats. The only stat that matters in football is goals scored.

Exactly, he uses stats to slate Anderson and the other midfielders at the club but doesn't want us to use stats when debating Modric.

Explain how I was getting my butt kicked?

3rd most chances created behind Mata and Silva.

The reason he didn't have as many assists as them was because Silva had Aguero and Dzeko & Mata had Drogba and Lampard etc.

I would have thought that was quite clear.

What about his goals and assists SLM? He used to average 3 - 4 a season. That's not much better than Anderson

Would you like to comte his goals and assists to Fabregas who I do not even believe is world class?
