I heard the same rumour about a takeover from Singapore Airlines owners about a week ago.
From what I can see, SIA was launched by Airbus, and owns 49% of Virgin Atlantic.
It's the second largest airline in the world and at capitalization is worth $14 Billion US dollars or £9.1 Billion pounds sterling.
It's probably an unfounded rumour, but the thought...

Emirates are the biggest airline in the world followed by United, Lufthansa, BA etc - Singapore Airlines not the 2nd largest airline in the world.

Lufthansa is part of Star Alliance which covers Thai Air,Etihad,Lufthansa,Air Canada,SAS and others.Singapore Air is the 3rd largest in the world by market cap and bigger than Emirates.
